Why do we need a policy? “We cannot continue to tell communities to take HIV/AIDS seriously if we fail to take action to protect and support staff in our own organisation” ACORD staff member Mozambique • To be a responsible employer. • It is a commitment to action. • To guide managers on how to deal with HIV and AIDS issues among their staff. • It helps employees to know what support is available to them. • Ensures all employees at ALL levels know what is expected of them (stigma and discrimination). What does a HIV policy look like? No standard HIV policy. Organisations need to develop a policy that is suitable to their own environment. Things to consider: • Prevalence rate – high or low? • Is there support from management? • What can the organisation realistically offer the organisation? E.g. Are there funds to cover testing, treatment?
