Section 7: What is mainstreaming?
Activity Outline
Objective: At the end of this activity, participants should be able to understand the concept
of mainstreaming.
Duration/Timing: 60 minutes
Materials/Resources: Case studies.
20 minutes 1. Divide the group into smaller groups and give each one a case-study.
2. Ask them to read the case-study and discuss what they think
mainstreaming is and what does this involve.
25 minutes 3. Bring the group back together and ask them to share their thoughts.
4. Ask the group, what elements of the case-studies would be relevant for
their organisation. For example, we would be able to provide information
sessions to all our staff and volunteers but we would not be able to fund
ARV treatment.
15 minutes 5. Summary – explain that mainstreaming may sound like very complicated
but involves simple steps that all organisations can do. From the
case-studies and discussions, highlight a few things. Emphasise the point
that mainstreaming should be contextual. What is happening in Africa
may not seem related to China BUT similar impacts of HIV can happen if
it is not considered an issue. Mainstreaming work can help to prevent the
effects of HIV and AIDS on a large scale. Small steps can result in
significant changes
