Discussing HIV and AIDS can sometimes be a minefield! It can easily becoming confusing with so many different acronyms and new terminology. When discussing HIV and AIDS, it is very important to be aware of the language we use. If we do not take care, it can change people’s perceptions of HIV or reinforce negative stereotypes. Session Outline Objective: At the end of the session, the participants will be able to understand the importance of using appropriate terminologies related to HIV and AIDS. Duration/Timing: 45-60 Minutes Language Materials/Resources: flip chart paper or white board, post-it notes, or small pieces of paper, white board marker, pens, hand outs of terminology Time Activity 5-10 minutes Ice-breaker – encourages participants to relax and be interactive. The following icebreaker can be used. Ask participants to stand up. Pick a name (doesn’t have to be a participantscan use your own) and tell them they have to say the word in the different manner that you read out (e.g. surprised, angry, shy, happy, excited, nervous, seductive). 5 minutes Introduce yourself to the group. Explain why we are all here and what the objective of the session is. Explain that language is very important in our daily lives, it’s a way to communicate feelings, thoughts, actions. Ask them to think back to the icebreaker. \30 minutes 1) Hand out a few post-its/ pieces of paper to each participant along with pens. 2) Ask participants to think about any words or acronyms that are related to HIV. Ask them to note down any local terms they know of too. 3) Ask the group to stick their terms on the board or flipchart paper and give them a few minutes to look at all the other responses. 4) Ask them to group them together. 5) Ask the group if there are any terms they don’t know, ask participants to explain. Ask participants to explain any local terms. (If you are unsure of any of the words, explain that you don’t know and will find out). 6) Explain to the group any words or language that is used incorrectly by people. Using the handout, explain why it is best to avoid this terminology. 8
7) Give each participant a handout. 8) Ask them to think of any other language or terminology that reinforces negative attitudes and behaviours and corresponding suggestions. 9) To end the session, agree as a group, the language and terminology that you will use for all future sessions, including any local terminology. Explain that for prevention work to be successful, using appropriate words and terminology is critical.
