4. Heineken in Africa • Has lots of employees that are on short-term or monthly contracts e.g. truck drivers, so there is not a steady relationship between employer and employees. Therefore the emphasis of their programme is PREVENTION. • E.g. on family day they give information on HIV and promote VCT. • Successful because; a) focus on small target population b) commitment from all levels of the company c) serious investment in training and knowledge transfer d) active search for partnerships with NGOs and transparent to government.

Celtel mobile phone company in Africa • Management communicated their commitment through signed letter from the MD which is displayed in every Celtel office. • Clear information is given to each employee about what the programme means, how it works, which VCT centres are contracted and how confidentiality is guaranteed. • HR dept are allocated to be responsible for the implementation of the programme. • M&E of policy included focus group discussions, KAPB survey, HIV prevalence survey (anonymous). • Success – because of management support, guaranteed confidentiality, and realization that it is a long-term process – it takes time to see the effect.
