Time Activity Section 3: HIV and Development Activity 3.2: What is Development II Activity Outline Objective: At the end of this activity, participants should be able to understand development issues globally, nationally and locally.\ Duration/Timing: 40 minutes Materials/Resources: Whiteboard/flipchart paper, pens, VSO HIV and AIDS Q&A booklets. Before the session, create an information table where people can access information about local issues. It might be worth visiting local NGOs for leaflets and the CDC for health related information. Include VSO’s HIV and AIDS Q&A booklet. Make sure the area is in a convenient location which people can access. 30 minutes 1. Ask the group to discuss what development means to them. 2. Ask the group to discuss what issues they feel prevents or slows development globally. Note these down on the board or flipchart paper. 3. Now ask the group what issues prevent or slows development nationally. Again write these on the board. Discuss whether there are any similarities or differences or why this might be. 4. Finally ask about what issues prevent or slow development locally. Try and ask them to be as specific as possible. For example if people mention health or disease ask them what kinds of diseases. 5. Comment on the differences in opinion about different issues. If HIV has not been mentioned, raise the topic. This can be in conjunction with other local epidemics e.g. swine flu, T.B. Discuss with the group whether they think these have an impact on their local community and why. 10 minutes 6. Summary – ask the group to look back at the issues at different levels, looking at the similarities and differences. Explain that development issues impact on different levels. Sometimes a local issue spreads and becomes a national problem quickly. Sometimes even globally. Look at the recent swine flu epidemic. It becomes a global issue in a very short space of time because of modern living through migration and 44
international travel. Emphasise that this session is to be aware of the local issues we face but also to realise that what happens in other provinces can and already does have an impact on our local environment. (Source: Susan Oldham, Education Adviser, VSO China, 2008) 45
