Section 9: HIV Workplace Policy
As part of VSO’s commitment to inclusion and HIV mainstreaming, VSO has both an
international and local country HIV workplace policy. A policy is important for many
reasons, including:
To be a responsible employer.
A commitment to action.
A guide for employers in how to deal with HIV and AIDS issues in the workplace.
A guide for employees in matters related to HIV and AIDS.
Ensures that all everyone in the organisation, at all levels, knows what is expected
of them. This is very important in terms of stigma and discrimination.
A HIV and AIDS workplace policy can take many forms and must be specific to the
local context. Looking at what support an organisation can realistically offer is
important to ensure that the policy developed is relevant and applicable. It is not just a
piece of paper. It is a set of values and actions that should be part of the everyday
work of the organisation.
Prevention is a large element of a workplace policy. HIV mainstreaming activities in
staff induction, staff training, health and safety can all be part of an organisation’s
commitment to providing support to employees.
For some organisations, developing equal opportunities and health and safety policies
might also be part of this process. For others, these basic policies may already be in
place.
There is no standard policy. Examples of policies are included in this section but
remember it must be relevant for your organisation in order for it to be implemented
successfully. Draw on other examples for ideas but ultimately, it is your own policy.
