Time Activity Activity 3.3: Problem Tree Section 3: HIV and Development Activity Outline Objective: At the end of this activity, participants should be able to understand causes and consequences of poverty in China. Duration/Timing: 60-120 minutes Materials/Resources: flipchart paper, pens, post-it notes, Annex 11 problem tree diagram. 45-minutes Note to facilitator: The topic chosen is broad so that it can generate wider discussion as an introduction to development issues. Use the problem tree diagram as template. 1. Divide into two smaller groups. Give each group some pens, a flipchart paper and post-it notes. 2. Assign one group to be the “causes” group and one to be the “consequences” group. 3. Ask each group to write down as many causes or consequences (depending on their group) to the problem on a separate post-it note. 4. State the problem - Poverty in China. 5. As you go round the groups, ask them to be as specific as possible and connect problems using arrows. For example, a cause of poverty in China could be lack of education. This is a broad cause but it could be more specific to the local context. For example, not enough schools in the local area. 40 -50 minutes 6. Bring the group back together and put the two parts together. The causes are the roots of the tree, the consequences the branches. 7. Ask each group to give feedback on their flipchart, explaining why they thought certain things were interlinked. After each group, finishes, ask if there are any points to add that are not yet written down. 8. Ask the group now to look at the local causes and consequences. Is there anything that they can do? 20 minutes 9. Summary – explain that development issues are interlinked. One effects another. It can be easy to fall into the “poverty trap”, e.g. without 46
education = limited job opportunities = crime, drug use, further poverty, social exclusion. Explain that the wider causes and consequences have an impact locally and that is where we can be most effective. Emphasise some of the ideas that the group have already come up with that they can do in their local environment. 47
