Activity 5.10: The BIG Question
Activity Outline
Objective: At the end of this activity, participants should understand why asking this
question can be judgmental or stigmatizing and how to respond differently.
Duration/Timing: 30 minutes
Materials/Resources: Flipchart paper/Whiteboard, pens, sticky labels or
pieces of card (character labels/cards), a ball or small object that can be
Before the session:
1. Make up a song or a chant with words “WHERE DID YOU GET IT?”
You can make it in Chinese. Ask participants for help.
2. Write names of different characters that make up a local community.
Alternatively you can draw these characters. Characters can include:
mother, businessman, teacher, student, farmer, wife, hairdresser, local
government official. Think of characters that you would find in your local
context.
15 minutes 1. Introduce the session and get everyone to start singing the song. Begin
by singing the song and walking around in a circle.
2. Stop after a minute and explain the rest of the activity.
3. Ask the group to think about their character.
4. Ask them to nominate a leader.
5. Explain that they start by singing the song and passing the ball around
the group.
6. When the leader claps their hands, the person holding the ball must walk
into the centre of the circle.
7. The group then points their fingers at the person and chants 3 times
“Where did you get it?”
8. The person must then respond – i.e. “I got it from my husband”. Remind
them they must answer as their character.
9. Note their response on the board/flipchart paper and continue with the
game until most/all have had an opportunity to respond to the question.
15 minutes 10. De-brief asking the group the following questions:
