Time Activity Section 5: Stigma and Discrimination Activity 5.6: Power and Diversity Activity Outline Objective: At the end of this activity, participants should be able to understand the different members that make up a community and the differences in power and skills within a community. Duration/Timing: 30-45 minutes Materials/Resources: Sticky labels with names of different members of a community (character labels). Before the session, write on sticky labels the names of different members of a community. Can include: a teacher, a doctor, a politician or government official, a VSO volunteer, a mother, a student, a vegetable seller, a truck driver, a commercial sex worker, a farmer, a construction worker, etc. Include context-specific members. Assign one member of the community to be HIV positive. Don’t stereotype and make it the sex worker or construction worker. 15 minutes Round One 1. Assign everyone in the group a character. 2. Ask them to stand in a line at the end of the room. 3. Ask them to get into role and think about their character for a few minutes and the life they lead. 4. Explain that you will read out different statements related to power, access to resources and opportunities. If they feel their character would typically be able to carry out the activity or would rise to that particular responsibility/ opportunity then they should step forward by one (small) pace. Participants should make intelligent guesses if they don’t know the answer, remembering the region/country context. 5. Read out 4 or 5 of the power/opportunities statements (see below for some examples). Include statements that are relative to your context. Ensure that you include the asterisked ones to draw attention to gender issues. 6. After each statement, if appropriate query any participant’s decisions 61
