historical interest, and simple technical material written for<br />

the general reader. Video newscasts are reviewed<br />

Conversation in French 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 201, or equivalent knowledge of French.<br />

Development of skills required to participate in sustained<br />

conversation, to pose and to answer questions, and to<br />

present oral reports. This course is designed to help the<br />

student satisfy the requirements of routine school and social<br />

situations, and talk casually about topics of current public and<br />

Prerequisite: 201. Survey of the historical, social and cultural<br />

background of the French people and nation from the<br />

prehistoric era of cave dwellers, through tribal migrations,<br />

the Roman occupations, the emergence of the monarchy of<br />

the Franks, the expansion of the monarchy’s power and<br />

influence in France and in Europe up to the era of Louis XIV,<br />

ending with the decades of political, social, and economic<br />

Prerequisite: 220 or permission. Study of the beginnings of<br />

literary expression in France from the epics and dramatic<br />

representations of the Middle Ages, through the Renaissance<br />

Racine, and through the Age of Enlightenment featuring<br />

movements and writers in France during the nineteenth and<br />

Stendhal, Flaubert, and Zola, and twentieth-century writers<br />

Prerequisite: Senior major in French. The seminar addresses<br />

the college-wide general education senior theme and text for<br />
