300, 315, 340, 345), completion of all general education<br />

requirements, 16 credits of chemistry including 151, 152, 305<br />

and 306 (310 is strongly recommended), at least one course<br />

in mathematics, and the full year internship of at least 30<br />

credits, which apply to the biology major and the science<br />

concentration. Acceptance into a hospital internship is<br />

dependent upon many factors, including grades, interviews,<br />

and letters of recommendation.<br />

Upon the satisfactory completion of all requirements at the<br />

college and the hospital, the student is eligible for the B.S.<br />

degree with a major in biology. In addition, after successfully<br />

passing an examination given by the Registry of Medical<br />

Technologists of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists,<br />

the student becomes a registered medical technologist.<br />

Minor in Biology: To complete the Minor in Biology, a<br />

student must complete at least 20 credit hours of biology at<br />

or above the level of 201 this does not include BIO 214.<br />

CHEMISTRY (CHE)<br />

A student wishing to major in chemistry may choose from<br />

one of the three options below.<br />

Major for Bachelor of Arts Degree (B.A.) in Chemistry: 34<br />

credits in chemistry at or above 151 including 300, 305, 325,<br />

490. Also required are MAT 230 and either PHY <strong>11</strong>0-<strong>11</strong>1 or<br />

PHY 212. All students must successfully pass the Major Field<br />

Test in chemistry.<br />

Major for Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.) in Chemistry: 60<br />

credits in the sciences including 300, 305, 306, 325, 326, 430,<br />

490, together with either 360 or 2 credits of 498. Also<br />

required are MAT 230 and 231 and either PHY <strong>11</strong>0-<strong>11</strong>1 or<br />

PHY 212. The remaining courses are chosen from chemistry at<br />

or above 151, biology courses numbered 201 and above,<br />

physics courses numbered 201 and above, and mathematics<br />

courses above 231. All students must successfully pass the<br />

Major Field Test in chemistry.<br />

Major for Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.) in Chemistry<br />

with a concentration: 60 credits in the sciences including 300,<br />

305, 325, and 490, together with either 360 or 2 credits of<br />

498. Students must also complete the requirements within<br />

one area of a chemistry concentration. Also required are<br />

MAT 230 and 231 and either PHY <strong>11</strong>0-<strong>11</strong>1 or PHY 212. The<br />

remaining courses are chosen from chemistry at or above<br />

151, biology courses numbered 201 and above, physics<br />

courses numbered 201 and above, and mathematics courses<br />

above 231. All students must successfully pass the Major<br />

Field Test in chemistry.<br />

Concentration in Bio-Organic Chemistry: In addition to the<br />

requirements stated above, the required courses are 306,<br />

3<strong>11</strong>, 312, 410, BIO 203 and 204, and at least 2 credits of<br />

concentration electives from the following set: 270, 315, 325,<br />

326, 380/480, 420, 430, 498 (credits beyond those previously<br />

required above), 499, BIO 410, 415, and PHY 250.<br />

Concentration in Chemical Physics: In addition to the<br />

requirements stated above, the required courses are 326,<br />

425, MAT 310, PHY 212 and at least <strong>11</strong> credits of<br />

concentration electives from the following set: 380/480, 420,<br />

425, 430, 435, 498 (credits beyond those previously required<br />

above), 499, physics courses numbered 201 and above, and<br />

mathematics courses above 231.<br />

Concentration in Environmental Science: In addition to the<br />

requirements stated above, the required courses are CHE<br />

270, 306, 315, BIO 320, ENV 170/171, and at least 6 credits of<br />

concentration electives from the following set: chemistry<br />

courses numbered 201 and above, biology courses numbered<br />

201 and above, physics courses numbered 201 and above,<br />

and mathematics courses above 231.<br />

Minor: 20 credits in chemistry at or above 151 including 300<br />

and 305.<br />

Associate in Science Degree (A.S.) in Chemical Technology:<br />

25 credits in chemistry courses numbered 151 or higher<br />

including 300, 305, 310, and 420; PHY <strong>11</strong>0-<strong>11</strong>1 or PHY 212;<br />

and MAT 140 or higher. The chemical technology program<br />

prepares students for an immediate position as a research<br />

assistant or laboratory technician.<br />

Teaching requirements: Students who wish to teach in this<br />

content area must meet all requirements for the major field,<br />

and also meet the School of Education’s developmental<br />

licensing requirements. Contact the School of Education for<br />

high school licensing program descriptions and specifics for<br />

each licensure area. All courses are subject to change based<br />

upon current requirements from the Division of Professional<br />

Standards, Indiana Department of Education.<br />

Placement testing: Most science students will take CHE 151<br />

and 152; however, well-prepared students may be able to<br />

place into CHE 253 or 300-level CHE courses. Students who<br />

place into CHE 253, and complete that course with a “C” or<br />

better, will also receive credit for CHE 151. Students who<br />

place into a 300 level CHE course, and complete that course<br />

with a “C” or better, will also receive credit for CHE 151 and<br />

152.<br />
