complete a formal inquiry project with presentation to peers<br />

to fulfill the comprehensive requirement for graduation in<br />

elementary education. Students conduct their projects in<br />

elementary classrooms. The course integrates the general<br />

education theme and readings. Attendance at convocations is<br />

required. This course is taken the semester prior to student<br />

Child Development and Observation<br />

Prerequisite: permission of appropriate program director.<br />

This course involves foundational coursework and<br />

observation in a school setting. This course examines<br />

children’s and adolescent’s physical, cognitive, language and<br />

literacy, social, emotional, and moral development. Selfconcept,<br />

identity and motivation, and exceptionality areas<br />

also addressed. Themes of diversity and working with parents<br />

are also woven throughout this course. The observation<br />

portion of the course emphasizes ways of observing,<br />

recording, and analyzing children’s behavior and<br />

development in relation to planning and implementing<br />

developmentally appropriate curriculum. (ADD)<br />

Second Language Learning 2 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Permission of appropriate program director.<br />

This course introduces the process and stages of second<br />

language acquisition, student capabilities at each stage, and<br />

the role of culture and acculturation in language acquisition.<br />

Teaching strategies and lesson and assessment modification<br />

are emphasized. (ADD)<br />

EDU 515 Principles and Problems<br />

of EC and MC Education 2 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Permission of appropriate program director.<br />

This foundation course includes the following themes: politics<br />

of education, critical historical events, modern philosophical<br />

influences, schools as organizations, standards for teaching,<br />

educational equity, school reform, early and middle<br />

childhood and adolescent approaches to curriculum and<br />
