Ceramics I 3 credits<br />
Introduction to the creative possibilities of both functional<br />
and sculptural ceramics. Creativity and good threedimensional<br />
design are emphasized. The course includes<br />
instruction in the basic fundamentals of clay construction,<br />
potter’s wheel techniques, glaze application, and firing. Six<br />

Principles of Design I 3 credits<br />
An introduction to art through the study of the elements and<br />
principles of design. Design theories are studied and students<br />
are introduced to commonly used terminology. Six contact<br />

Design Principles for Communication 3 credits<br />
This introductory course provides an overview of the visual<br />
process and the impact of design on culture and the<br />
environment. Giving meaningful visual form to<br />
communication, the student gains primary understanding of<br />
perception and problem-solving skills as they relate to<br />

Art Appreciation: The Image of Culture 3 credits<br />
This course considers world art, for appreciative and<br />
aesthetic purposes, from ancient times to the present. The<br />
sequence of study examines works of art as cohesive units in<br />
architecture, sculpture, painting, and craft. (FAL)<br />
ART 155<br />
Beginning Photography 3 credits<br />
An introduction and exploration of photography. This course<br />
is oriented to the non-art major. Composition, camera<br />
manipulation, and basic darkroom techniques are explored.<br />
This course is intended to help students make more effective<br />
use of their cameras. The course is open to all students but<br />
may not be used as the photography requirement for art<br />
majors. Four contact hours per week. (ADD)<br />
ART 201<br />
Basic Three-Dimensional Design 3 credits<br />
An introduction to three-dimensional design through the<br />
study of the elements and principles of 3D design theory. The<br />
elements of 3D design are discussed, utilizing standard<br />
terminology. A series of guided exercises and projects help<br />
the student understand basic three-dimensional design<br />
principles. Six contact hours per week. (SPR)<br />
ART 206<br />
Design and Color Theory 3 credits<br />
Prerequisite: ART 106. Color theory and a more intense<br />
application of design theories in problem- solving projects.<br />
The effect of media and technique on visual communication<br />
is explored. Students are now encouraged to critique their<br />

Watercolor 3 credits<br />
Recommended prerequisite: 221. Painting with transparent<br />
watercolor. Study of traditional and contemporary styles,<br />
composition, and techniques. Six hours contact per week.<br />

Introduction to Painting 3 credits<br />
Recommended prerequisite: 104 or 106. Basic instruction and<br />
exploration of acrylic and oil painting media and techniques.<br />
Color theory and color mixing as they relate to the paint<br />
media are studied. Six contact hours per week. (SPR)<br />
ART 226<br />
Typography 3 credits<br />
Prerequisites: 106 or 109, and 206. Visual communications<br />
including the design of letterforms and the principles of visual<br />
organization which are introduced in this typography course.<br />
A historical context is established by teaching handset type<br />
and relief printing as a foundation for letterform and<br />
composition design and to explore visual problems which<br />
integrate type with drawing concepts and the computer. Six<br />

Computer Graphic Design I 3 credits<br />
Prerequisite: 106, 206, or permission. An introduction into<br />
the use of the Macintosh computer system and software such<br />
as PageMaker, Quark Express, Adobe Illustrator and<br />
PhotoShop, and other current computer programs used in<br />
the production of graphic design. Six hours contact per week.<br />

Printmaking I 3 credits<br />
Prerequisite: 104, 106, or instructor permission. An<br />
introduction to the arts of relief and intaglio printmaking.<br />
Students are introduced to basic relief techniques such as the<br />
linocut and the woodcut, and to intaglio techniques such as<br />
the drypoint and etching. This course fulfills one of the<br />
requirements for art education certification. Six contact hours<br />

Photography I 3 credits<br />
A basic photography course designed to acquaint the student<br />
with artistic use of the camera and darkroom. Six contact<br />
