the Renaissance from its beginnings in the Dugento to its<br />

The Age of Kings 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 240 or HIS 102 or permission. A study of the art<br />

of the Baroque, Rococo, and Neo-Classical periods and how<br />

they reflect the changing cultural, political, and religious<br />

The Modern World 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 240 or HIS 102 or permission. Traces the<br />

complex world of art beginning with its roots in the ideas of<br />

Romanticism and ending with post World War II American<br />

art. Emphasis is placed upon international developments<br />

The Contemporary Scene 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 240 or HIS 102 or permission. Beginning with<br />

the international pop movement in the mid-1950s, the<br />

student investigates the contemporary art scene and the<br />

Intercultural Art 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 240 or HIS 102 or permission. A series of courses<br />

that explores the art and cultures which comprise the<br />

majority of the world’s peoples. Emphasis is placed upon<br />

African, Oceanic, Native American, and the Middle and Far<br />

Eastern Cultures. May be taken a second time when topics<br />

vary. With the exception of ARH/ART majors, this course<br />

partially satisfies the general education requirement in the<br />

American Art and Architecture 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 240 or HIS 102 or permission. An examination of<br />

the styles and forms of American visual art from the Colonial<br />

period to the present. This course explores the connection<br />

between the development of the visual arts and historical<br />

and social events in both the United States and Europe and<br />

the development of uniquely American artistic styles and<br />

History of Photography 3 credits<br />

This class will piece together a history of photography’s ‘major<br />

trends’ from its inception to the present. The class will<br />

examine images and image-makers from various time periods<br />

and will contextualize the production of photographs with<br />

relevant historical and critical writings, films, videos, and<br />

photographers’ manifestoes. (2SO)<br />

Special Topics in Art History 3 credits<br />

A series of courses with specialized topics based upon current<br />

research and the discretion of the instructor. These courses<br />

could cover the history of a specific medium such as<br />

printmaking or film, or they could explore art created at a<br />

specific time or in response to a specific historical event.<br />

Museum Methods 3 credits<br />

An examination of the development of the collecting,<br />

management, organization, business, and ethics of museum<br />

administration with special attention paid to the art museum.<br />

ARH 460<br />

Internship 3-6 credits<br />

Prerequisites: Art history major with junior or senior status,<br />

3.00 GPA in major, and department permission, interview,<br />

and approval of site. An approved internship or work<br />

experience related to the study of art history for art history<br />

majors. Field experience is contracted between the student<br />

and the cooperating establishment with the assistance and<br />

approval of the department liaison. The contract includes<br />

goals, procedures, credit assignment, supervision, and<br />

evaluation criteria. Credits earned in the internship are not<br />

included in the 40-credit limit in the student’s major. May<br />

enroll in three to six credits. Graded S/U. (SEM)<br />

ARH 490<br />

Senior Thesis Seminar 1-3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Art history major, minor, or by permission. A<br />

senior level research class required for all art history majors.<br />

Each student researches and writes a major paper on a topic<br />

mutually agreed upon by student and art history advisor.<br />

They then defend the paper to a panel of three faculty.<br />

Student may enroll for one to three credits; may repeat one<br />

time for a total of three credits. (FAL)<br />

Independent Study 3 credits<br />

A senior-level research course with a topic mutually agreed<br />

upon by the student and the faculty member. May include<br />

either an annotated bibliography or a research paper and<br />

may be taken more than once if the topics vary. (ADD)<br />

Basic Drawing 3 credits<br />

Introduction to basic drawing skills including contour<br />

drawing, gesture drawing, rendering, figure drawing, and<br />

perspective drawing. Six contact hours per week. (FAL)<br />
