BIO 451/452/453<br />

Medical Technology Clinical 30 credits<br />

Prerequisite: BIO 201, 202, 203, and 204. A 12-month<br />

sequence of lab and clinical experiences, meeting in a<br />

hospital five days a week for 40 hours per week. BIO 452 and<br />

453 are continuations. (Annually)<br />

BIO 460<br />

Internship in Biology 1-6 credits<br />

Prerequisite: BIO 201, 202, 203, and 204. The internship in<br />

biology permits students to earn academic credit for work or<br />

volunteer activity that deals with the biological sciences or<br />

prepares the student for graduate and/or professional school.<br />

The internship is designed to integrate classroom knowledge<br />

with practical work experience in the student’s chosen area<br />

of study. Students are evaluated by their on-the-job<br />

supervisor and monitoring faculty member. Students also<br />

present both a written and oral summation of their<br />

experience. A minimum of four hours of actual work<br />

experience per week or 60 hours during the semester is<br />

required for each credit to be earned. Enrollment in the<br />

course is arranged after review and approval of the proposed<br />

internship by program faculty. This course may be repeated<br />

for an accumulated total of six credits. Three credits earned<br />

in this course may count towards the 35 credits of biology<br />

required for the major, with any additional credits earned<br />

applied towards the total 60 credits of science required for<br />

the bachelor of science degree. (SEM)<br />

BIO 462<br />

Environmental Education<br />

and Interpretation 2 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of BIO 201, 202, 203, and 204.<br />

Students will learn to “interpret” nature to a variety of<br />

audiences. The students will then apply the interpretive<br />

process to programs developed for the <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

EcoLab. One lecture and three hours laboratory per week.<br />

BIO 463<br />

Restoration Ecology 2 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of BIO 201, 202, 203, and 204. In<br />

this course we will learn the basic principles and process of<br />

ecological restoration and apply it to specific projects within<br />

the <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>University</strong> EcoLab. One lecture and three hours<br />

laboratory per week. (ADD)<br />

BIO 465<br />

Geographic Information Systems 2 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of BIO 201, 202, 203, and 204. This<br />

course will explore the use of geographic information systems<br />

to map and analyze spatial data. A wide range of GIS<br />

applications not limited to biology will be discussed. One<br />

lecture and three hours laboratory per week. (ADD)<br />

BIO 498<br />

Directed Senior Research 1-4 credits<br />

Under the guidance of a faculty sponsor, students identify a<br />

research topic, perform a literature review, create a research<br />

design, gather an analyze data, and report their findings with<br />

an APA-style manuscript and formal presentation. Papers<br />

deemed to be of sufficient quality by the faculty sponsor may<br />

be presented at a regional research conference. (ADD)<br />

BIO 280/380/480<br />

Special Topics 1-4 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 150. Special topics in biology as deemed<br />

necessary by needs of students. The course may include<br />

extensive field trips, lab opportunities, or special classes on<br />

important topics in biology. May be enrolled for one to four<br />

credits. (ADD)<br />

BIO 490<br />

Biology Seminar 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 150, senior biology majors. A venue for the<br />

presentation of current biological, medical, and<br />

environmental research topics by outside speakers. The<br />

emphasis is on facilitating the seniors’ career pursuits and<br />

exposing them to a myriad of post-graduate opportunities.<br />

The process of resume writing and electronic job search are<br />

discussed. The general education theme and readings are also<br />

integrated into the course. Attendance at convocation(s) is<br />

required. All students must take the ETS Biology Field Exam.<br />

BIO 499<br />

Independent Study 1-4 credits<br />

Prerequisite: BIO 201, 202, 203, and 204. An independent<br />

investigation of a topic in biology. The student must obtain<br />

the approval of the program faculty to begin the project and<br />

must have a written report accepted by the program faculty<br />

to receive credit at the completion of the project. May enroll<br />

for one to four credits. (ADD)<br />

BUS 101<br />

Introduction to Business 3 credits<br />

A survey of the field of business administration. Students<br />

acquire an understanding of and appreciation for business<br />

functions and career opportunities. All major aspects of<br />

business activity are covered. (SEM)<br />

BUS 135<br />

Survey of the Motorsport Industry 3 credits<br />

This course addresses such topics as history of the industry,<br />

growth of the sport nationally and worldwide, and economic<br />

impact of the industry for cities that host races. A survey of<br />

sanctioning organizations, industry-specific attributes, and a<br />

look at career opportunities are included. (FAL)<br />
