Pre-Nursing <strong>Course</strong> 1 credit<br />

This course focuses on socialization into the role of nurse<br />

through examination of nursing history and philosophy,<br />

education, and career development. Ethical and legal<br />

foundations of nursing practice are discussed in the context<br />

of current issues and trends. (SEM)<br />

NUR 200<br />

Pharmacology 2 credits<br />

Prerequisites: BIO 225, 226, and admission to nursing major<br />

or faculty permission. This course provides the student with<br />

knowledge of the physiological actions, therapeutic uses, and<br />

safe administration of selected drugs. The nursing process is<br />

used as a framework to explore specific nursing actions with<br />

rationales on administration, therapeutic effects, adverse<br />

effects, drug interactions, and patient/client education. (SEM)<br />

NUR 231<br />

Pathophysiology 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: BIO 223, 224, and admission to nursing major<br />

or faculty permission. This course systematically focuses on<br />

the physiologic and structural changes that occur during a<br />

pathologic process. The impact of disease is then studied<br />

through its alteration of normal body processes. The body’s<br />

ability to adjust to the stress of disease is addressed. Current<br />

diagnostics and treatments are also addressed. Competency<br />

NUR 238<br />

Human Nutrition 2 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to the nursing major or faculty<br />

permission. Study of normal nutrition as a science including:<br />

components and impact of various eating patterns; functions<br />

and sources of nutrients and other food constituents; use of<br />

food by the body; effects of sociopsychological, physical, and<br />

environmental factors throughout the life cycle, but with<br />

primary emphasis on the adult. In addition, a foundation for<br />

implementing nutrition care in acute and community settings<br />

is provided. Required for AN and BSN nursing majors. Two<br />

NUR 310<br />

Legal/Ethical Aspects of Health Care 1-2 credits<br />

Open to majors in all fields. This course focuses on the legal<br />

and ethical aspects affecting health care. Topics include<br />

legal/ethical rights and responsibilities, court decisions,<br />

theories and principles of bioethics, various dilemmas with<br />

ethical and legal ramifications, and current trends. (ADD)<br />

NUR 315<br />

Healthcare Missions – Local 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Permission. Open to all majors. This course<br />

focuses on several aspects considered when preparing for<br />

cross-cultural healthcare missions. Included are cultural<br />

issues related to mission service as well as focusing on a<br />

specific culture. Spiritual, physical, emotional, and<br />

professional preparation for mission work will be considered.<br />

Resources and organizations involved in healthcare missions<br />

will be explored. Two lecture hours per week. The third credit<br />

is fulfilled by a local field experience. (ADD)<br />

NUR 316<br />

Health Care<br />

Missions – Overseas 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Permission. Open to all majors. This course<br />

focuses on several aspects considered when preparing for<br />

cross-cultural health care missions. Included are cultural<br />

issues related to mission service as well as focusing on a<br />

specific culture. The course examines the culture of the<br />

country where the abroad experience will take place.<br />

Spiritual, physical, emotional, and professional preparation<br />

for mission work will be considered. Resources and<br />

organizations involved in health care missions will be<br />

explored. Two lecture hours per week. The third credit is<br />

fulfilled by a field experience abroad. This course partially<br />

satisfies the general education requirements in the cultural<br />

NUR 320<br />

Complementary Health Practices 2 credits<br />

Open to majors in all fields. This course examines various<br />

holistic or complementary health practices as to their health<br />

related benefits, legal/ethical aspects, and incorporation into<br />

nursing practice. Topics may include acupuncture,<br />

homeopathics, therapeutic touch, music therapy, meditation,<br />

aromatherapy, and current trends. (ADD)<br />

NUR 325<br />

Loss, Grief, and End of Life 2 credits<br />

Open to majors in all fields. This course provides the student<br />

with knowledge to assist the client, family, and other<br />

healthcare professionals addressing issues related to end of<br />

life care. End of life decisions and care are explored in<br />

relation to internal and external factors. Holistic, multidisciplinary<br />

approaches to end of life are discussed and<br />

evaluated. Concepts of grief and loss are also examined.<br />

Spirituality in Healthcare<br />

Across the Lifespan 3 credits<br />

This course focuses on the spiritual aspects related to<br />

healthcare across the lifespan. Professional, ethical, and legal<br />

aspects are explored. The stages of spiritual development and<br />

implication of appropriate spiritual care provide a basis for<br />

understanding the spiritual dimension of healthcare. (ADD)<br />

NUR 340<br />

Transcultural Issues in Healthcare 2 credits<br />

Open to majors in all fields. The focus of this course is to<br />

promote culturally sensitive and congruent healthcare to<br />

clients across the life span. Emphasis is placed on examining<br />
