Prerequisite: 101 or permission. This course examines the<br />

social context of health, illness, and healthcare. Particular<br />

attention is paid to political debates over healthcare, the<br />

interaction of various healthcare professionals, the effect of<br />

Peace and Justice<br />

in the Developing World 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 101 or permission. This course traces the recent<br />

sociocultural, political, and economic changes associated with<br />

modernization and globalization. Students address North-<br />

South issues so they can contribute meaningfully in public<br />

policy discussion, civic decision-making, and develop crosscultural<br />

and service skills. This course partially satisfies the<br />

general education requirement in the cultural awareness<br />

Experiential Learning:<br />

Social Justice in Action 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: 101, 145, and additional social justice elective,<br />

or permission. Additional social justice elective and<br />

permission required. Through collaboration with community<br />

activists, students gain grounded insight and hands-on<br />

experience while learning from the perspectives of those in<br />

the community. In return, students offer host organizations<br />

their skills in sociological analysis and research. (SEM)<br />

Criminology 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 101 or permission. This course takes a critical<br />

and analytical perspective on the criminal justice system in<br />

the United States using cross-national comparisons. The<br />

system is surveyed by attention to community, media, crime<br />

statistics, law enforcement, courts and corrections, the<br />

operation and influences of the various components, and<br />

criminological theories concerning the causes and remedies<br />

for criminal deviance. (ADD)<br />

Social Movements 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 101 or permission. An analysis of the processes<br />

shaping the emergence, objectives, structures, strategies,<br />

tactics, and long-term outcomes of representative<br />

relationship between the social group and the self. Symbolic<br />

interactionism is used as the major frame of reference for the<br />

analysis of social processes, all forms of interaction and the<br />

relationship between the individual and the norms and<br />

Sociology Internship 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: 101 and sociology major or minor, or<br />

permission. Supervised professional experience and the<br />

application of sociological skills to provide students with the<br />

opportunity to develop their career interest in sociology.<br />

Senior Sociology Seminar 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Senior sociology major. Intensive reading and<br />

discussion of sociological works furthering the development<br />

of a sociological imagination. Assigned readings are linked to<br />

the general education theme of the year, and students are<br />

required to attend convocations. A formal written project is<br />

required. Offered jointly with POL 490. (FAL)<br />

Independent Study 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing and permission.<br />

Guided readings and research. May enroll for one to three<br />

SPA 101<br />

Introduction to Spanish I 4 credits<br />

Introductory study of the Spanish language with emphasis on<br />

building adequate vocabulary and sense of structure to carry<br />

out routine tasks and engage in simple conversation. The<br />

course is designed to help the student ask and answer<br />

questions about familiar topics and handle basic social<br />

situations, write simple sentences, learn about aspects of<br />

everyday culture in Spain and Latin America. This course<br />

partially satisfies the general education requirement in the<br />
