Prerequisite: 301 or permission. A study of the multiple legal<br />

issues faced by managers in the modern workplace,<br />

beginning with a survey of basic legal terminology and<br />

institutions, followed by a discussion of employment<br />

relationships, labor unions and collective bargaining, case law<br />

impacting contemporary concerns such as ADA, ADEA, FMLA,<br />

OSHA worker’s compensation, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act,<br />

employment at will, wrongful termination and reduction-inforce,<br />

workplace violence, risk analysis and insurance<br />

coverage, unfair competition issues, privacy and the<br />

electronic workplace, preventative law and compliance<br />

policies, alien workers, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.<br />

BUS 360<br />

Co-op/Internship in Business 1-6 credits<br />

Prerequisites: Departmental permission and junior or senior<br />

class standing. Students work in supervised public or private<br />

industry positions related to their specific areas of study in<br />

either an internship or co-op status. Positions are expected to<br />

be at least at the managerial trainee level. Placements may or<br />

may not be paid positions. Students are evaluated both by<br />

their supervisor on the job and by means of a paper<br />

submitted as an end-of-course project to the monitoring<br />

faculty. A minimum of 60 hours of actual work experience is<br />

required for each credit earned. The course may be repeated<br />

in subsequent semesters for an accumulated total of six<br />

credits. Co-op and internship credits do not count toward the<br />

credits required in the major. Graded S/U. (SEM)<br />

Employee Training and Development 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 250. A study of the interrelatedness of lifelong<br />

learning, training needs and methods, and career<br />

development for today’s employees. Emphasis includes adult<br />

learning theory, training concepts and program development,<br />

and career progression through effective planning, curriculum<br />

design, needs assessment, transfer-of-learning, and<br />

Compensation and Benefit Management 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 250. This course places emphasis on<br />

applications, concepts, management and theory of pay<br />

practices, benefit programs, and human capital costeffectiveness.<br />

The course concludes with an introduction to<br />

Service Learning 1-3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: Junior/senior business major; faculty<br />

permission. The Service Learning in Business Program is<br />

designed to give on-the-job educational experiences with<br />

not-for-profit organizations to qualified students majoring in<br />

the business department or minoring in business creation and<br />

development. This introduction to practical, supervised work<br />

experience is related to the student’s area of study.<br />

Placement is arranged after application and approval by the<br />

department faculty. The student and employer give periodic<br />

reports and evaluations. The not-for-profit organizations have<br />

no financial commitments to the students. A minimum of 180<br />

hours of actual work experience is required to earn three<br />

credits. Credits earned in this course are not included in the<br />

40-credit limit in the student’s major. Graded S/U. (SEM)<br />

The Nonprofit Organization 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 101. This course examines the origins and<br />

history of nonprofit organizations in the United States and<br />

the global environment, provides a perspective and a sense<br />

of the magnitude and scope of the nonprofit sector, and<br />

explores its relationships with traditional business and with<br />

government. The course addresses social, political, economic,<br />

cultural and ideological issues, and outlines and analyzes<br />

types and characteristics of nonprofits and projections for the<br />

future. Classes include lectures, discussions, team project<br />

meetings, and guest speakers. (2SO)<br />

Nonprofit Financial<br />

Management 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: ACC 210. Through a general survey of the field<br />

of nonprofit financial management, students acquire an<br />

understanding of and appreciation for supervisory level<br />

financial functions in nonprofit organizations. All major<br />
