Classroom Research I 2 credits<br />

This first part of a two-course sequence teaches the<br />

Classroom Research II 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Permission of appropriate program director.<br />

This second part of a two-course sequence teaches the<br />

fundamentals of classroom-based research, culminating with<br />

a project paper and presentation required to complete the<br />

ENG L10/20/30/40<br />

Writing Tutorial 1 credit<br />

ENG L10/20/30/40 is lab time providing individualized<br />

instruction tailored to a writer’s specific needs at any point<br />

during undergraduate coursework. The tutorial is designed<br />

for students who want additional support in realizing<br />

targeted goals for specific writing situations. ENG lab hours<br />

(excluding L01) may be taken for up to a total of six hours<br />

ENG 099<br />

Basic English 3 credits<br />

This course is structured to prepare students for successful<br />

completion of ENG 101. For international students, it is a<br />

prerequisite. Practice is provided in elementary skills in<br />

usage, grammar, vocabulary, sentence construction, and<br />

paragraph writing. A grade of “C” or better is required. ENG<br />

099 may be repeated only one time; if the second attempt is<br />

unsuccessful, the student is ineligible to return based on<br />

lack of progress. Developmental courses, such as ENG 099,<br />

count toward the credits required for degree completion, and<br />

may be repeated for credit, with a maximum of 12 credits<br />

earned toward a bachelor degree or six credits toward an<br />

ENG 100<br />

Student Newspaper 1-3 credits<br />

Students earning credit for this course are responsible for<br />

publishing the campus newspaper. Credits earned for news<br />

writing, layout and design, and/or editing, as contracted with<br />

the faculty advisor. Five hours a week are expected per<br />

credit. May be repeated for up to six total credits. Graded<br />

ENG 101<br />

English Composition 3 credits<br />

In this course writing is promoted as a process of developing<br />

and shaping a text for an audience and a purpose. Students<br />

develop and practice inventing, revising, and editing<br />

strategies through multiple drafting assignments. Students<br />

can expect a high level of instructor feedback through written<br />

responses and/or conferences. This course partially satisfies<br />

the general education requirement in the effective<br />

communication category. (SEM, SUM)<br />

ENG H01<br />

Honors English Composition 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Students must meet honors program criteria.<br />

Requirements are identical to ENG 101, but content is<br />

enriched to challenge students with more experience in<br />

writing. Limited enrollment. This course partially satisfies the<br />

general education requirement in the effective<br />

communication category. (FAL)<br />

ENG L01<br />

English Composition Lab 1 credit<br />

This course is designed to support the work of ENG 101<br />

writers by providing individualized instruction tailored to a<br />

writer’s specific needs. If placement testing indicates<br />

registration in ENGL01, the student must successfully<br />

complete lab hour requirements in order to pass ENG 101.<br />

The tutorial instruction is not designed for students with<br />

weak mechanical skills. While the emphasis will differ from<br />

writer to writer, upon completing this course, students will<br />

know how to: 1) strengthen and demonstrate critical thinking<br />

and reading skills necessary to succeed at college-level<br />

writing; and 2) develop structures that allow for the complex<br />

treatment of ideas. If placement testing indicates registration<br />

in ENGL01, the student must successfully complete lab hour<br />

requirements in order to pass ENG101. (SEM)<br />

ENG 107<br />

The Fioretti 1 – 3 credits<br />

Students enrolled in this enhancement course are responsible<br />

for publishing the campus literary review, The Fioretti.<br />

Students will constitute an editorial board and will solicit and<br />

select manuscript submissions, edit manuscripts, and prepare<br />

the review for publications. Five hours each week per credit<br />

hour. May be repeated for up to six total credits. Graded S/U<br />

(SEM).<br />

ENG <strong>11</strong>5<br />

Written Analysis of Literature 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 101. This course continues instruction in writing<br />

skills by strengthening students’ critical reading strategies<br />

when writing about literary and scholarly texts. The course is<br />

designed to develop analytical and interpretive skills and<br />

deepen understanding of textual strategies, literary<br />

terminology, and genre distinctions. This course partially<br />

satisfies the general education requirement in the effective<br />

communication category. (SEM)<br />
