Prerequisite or corequisite: 170. Application of environmental<br />

studies methods, through field and laboratory exercises. One<br />

three hour lab period. Lab fee required. In conjunction with<br />

170, this course satisfies the lab portion of the general<br />

education requirement in the scientific and quantitative<br />

Introduction to Environmental Science<br />

This course examines the biological principles underlying the<br />

use, conservation and preservation of natural resources,<br />

covering such topics as management of harvested<br />

populations, pest management, biodiversity, conservation of<br />

endangered species, climate change, human demography,<br />

nutrient cycles and pollution. This course is generally offered<br />

only in the adult program. (ADD)<br />

A study of exercises, preparation and supervision of exercise<br />

Health & Physical Education<br />

Teaching Strategies and Methods 2 credits<br />

HPE Teaching Strategies designed to assist the HPE teaching<br />

major or minor in the development of lesson planning,<br />

leadership skills, methodology, and classroom procedures in<br />

the physical education environment. (2SE).<br />

ESS 150<br />

Individual Sports 3 credits<br />

A study of rules, skills, strategy, and self-testing relating to<br />

life-long sports. The student receives instruction in teaching<br />

techniques in tennis, golf, bowling, archery, tumbling and<br />

stunts, and other individual sports. Health and wellness is<br />

promoted in lifelong sports participation. (2SO)<br />

ESS 160<br />

Team Sports 3 credits<br />

A study of rules, skills, strategy, and self-testing relating to<br />

team sports. The student receives instruction in teaching<br />

techniques in volleyball, softball, soccer, touch and flag<br />

football, basketball, and other team sports. (2SE)<br />

Movement and Rhythmic Activities 2 credits<br />

This study and teaching application of the skills associated<br />

with movement, rhythmic, and associated activities in the<br />

physical education environment. Emphasis will be on the<br />

fundamental skills, appreciation, and instructional strategies<br />

and teaching methods. (2FE).<br />

ESS 230<br />

First Aid 2 credits<br />

Methods of rendering aid in case of sudden illness or<br />

accident. The student receives instruction on how to care for<br />

himself as well as others in emergency situations. Methods of<br />

maintaining optimal health are introduced. Instruction on<br />

how to perform CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) is<br />

provided. Fee required. (SEM)<br />

ESS 240<br />

Officiating 3 credits<br />

Theory and practice of procedures, techniques, and ethics of<br />

officiating baseball, basketball, football, softball, and<br />

volleyball. The student has the opportunity to become<br />

licensed in any or all of the above sports. $35 fee for state<br />

testing and license certification by the IHSAA. (2FE)<br />

ESS 249<br />

School Health Education 3 credits<br />

This course is designed to prepare the health educator in<br />

teaching for school health throughout the school curriculum.<br />

Emphasis will be on the content, activities, and resources to<br />

help the classroom teacher deliver health instruction to K –<br />

12 students and thereby help the students form a positive<br />

foundation for lifetime health and wellness. (ADD)<br />
