Special Topics in Chemistry 3-4 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 152 or equivalent preparation. Special topics in<br />

chemistry may include field trips, lab opportunities, or special<br />

classes on important topics in the field. (ADD)<br />

CHE 490<br />

Chemistry Seminar 2 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Senior chemistry major. Discussion of major<br />

issues in chemistry with emphasis on student presentations<br />

(oral and written) of general and specific topics discussed in<br />

current chemical journals. Integrates the general education<br />

theme and readings. Attendance at convocations is required.<br />

Two recitation hours per week. (FAL)<br />

CHE 498<br />

Directed Research 1-4 credits<br />

Prerequisites: Junior or senior science major and instructor<br />

permission. This course provides the opportunity for students<br />

with strong chemistry background and skills to carry out<br />

laboratory or computational research on a topic chosen by<br />

agreement with a faculty member, perform appropriate<br />

literature searches related to their chosen topic, analyze<br />

data, and report their findings through an ACS-style<br />

manuscript and a formal oral presentation. Papers of<br />

sufficient merit and novelty may be presented at a regional<br />

research conference. Students may enroll for one to four<br />

credits per semester. One credit corresponds to 3 hours of<br />

lab work per week, or the equivalent. Up to six credits may<br />

count for degree or concentration requirements. (SEM)<br />

CHE 499<br />

Independent Study 2-3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Instructor permission. An independent study of<br />

a laboratory and/or theoretical problem in chemistry; a<br />

report must be written in the form of a scientific paper<br />

presented to an appropriate audience and accepted by the<br />

department in order to receive credit. May enroll for two or<br />

three credits. (ADD)<br />

COL 099<br />

College Reading<br />

and Learning Strategies 3 credits<br />

This developmental course includes instruction in learning<br />

strategies such as notetaking, test taking, time management,<br />

and reading textbooks effectively. Reading improvement skills<br />

including comprehension skills, reading rate, and vocabulary<br />

building make up the three major units of study. Students<br />

also learn to utilize their personal learning styles. These<br />

learning strategies are applied to students’ academic<br />

coursework. A grade of “C” or better is required. COL 099<br />

may be repeated only one time; if the second attempt is<br />

unsuccessful, the student is ineligible to return based on<br />

lack of progress. Developmental courses, such as COL 099,<br />

count toward the credits required for degree completion, and<br />

may be repeated for credit, with a maximum of 12 credits<br />

earned toward a bachelor degree or six credits toward an<br />

COL 101<br />

Career Exploration 2 credits<br />

The study of the world of work from an objective viewpoint<br />

as well as from the subjective, focusing on the individual’s<br />

interests, skills, aptitudes, and desires concerning his/her<br />

work environment. Students assess various life styles and the<br />

importance of interpersonal communication skills. Students<br />

become acquainted with the techniques, procedures, and<br />

resources helpful in a successful job search campaign. A<br />

rational approach to the career decision-making process is<br />

also investigated. Enhancement courses, such as COL 101,<br />

may be repeated for credit, with a maximum of 12 credits<br />

earned toward a bachelor degree or six credits toward an<br />

First Year Experience 1 credit<br />

This course is designed to help students make a successful<br />

transition to the social and academic life of <strong>Marian</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>. To help students gain maximum benefits from<br />

college life, the course explores <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s heritage,<br />

structure, and mission, and connects students with faculty,<br />

staff, student leaders, facilities, resources, services,<br />

opportunities, Franciscan values, and learning goals. The class<br />

meets twice weekly. (FAL).<br />

COL 360<br />

Career Exploration Internship 1-3 credits<br />

The internship is designed to give students an opportunity to<br />

explore career options not directly related to the student’s<br />

major area of study. Three class meetings with the director of<br />

internships are required for completion of the course.<br />

Minimum 60 hours of work experience required per credit.<br />

Internship credits do not count toward credits required in a<br />

specific major. Graded S/U. (SEM)<br />

COM 101<br />

Public Speaking 3 credits<br />

General instruction in the principles of effective public<br />

speaking. Primary emphasis on performance, speech<br />

construction, and understanding basic rhetorical theory. This<br />

course partially satisfies the general education requirement<br />

in the effective communication category. (SEM)<br />

COM H01<br />

Honors Public Speaking 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: student must meet honors program criteria.<br />

Requirements are identical to COM 101, but content is<br />

enriched to challenge students with more experience in<br />

public speaking. Limited enrollment. This course partially<br />

satisfies the general education requirement in the effective<br />

communication category. (FAL)<br />
