Theatre Activities 1-2 credits<br />

Prerequisite: Instructor approval. Students who were<br />

involved either backstage as a technician or designer or<br />

onstage as a performer for any <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>University</strong> Department<br />

of Performing and Visual Arts production may register for one<br />

credit per production the following semester. Students will be<br />

responsible for producing a thesis paper that provides an indepth<br />

analysis of their theatre experience. Students may<br />

enroll each semester up to a maximum of six semesters.<br />

THE 120<br />

Beginning Acting 3 credits<br />

Fundamental techniques in acting with practice in<br />

pantomime, improvisation, movement and vocal production.<br />

Students learn through performing in class exercises,<br />

improvisations and scenes while also learning to observe and<br />

evaluate their classmates’ work and the work of professional<br />

actors. (FAL)<br />

THE 200<br />

Backstage Laboratory in<br />

Technical Theatre II 2 credits<br />

Prerequisites: THE 100 and instructor approval. An advanced<br />

laboratory experience in all phases of theatre production.<br />

Students are assigned specific projects and given upper-level<br />

responsibilities regarding the successful completion of tasks<br />

in the following areas of theatre production; building and<br />

painting sets, lighting, costuming, prop management, or<br />

house management. Students will be expected to participate<br />

and complete projects outside of regular class hours. (SEM)<br />

THE 231<br />

Design for Theatre I 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: ART 106. This course is an introduction to the<br />

history, styles, and techniques of stage scenery, lighting, and<br />

costumes. Students will learn the development of conceptual<br />

ideas, which are inspired by a dramatic text, to the finished<br />

product on the stage. A strong understanding of the<br />

theatrical vernacular is emphasized as students are<br />

encouraged to communicate their ideas through several<br />

mediums including written presentations, sketches, drafting,<br />

rendering, and three-dimensional models. (SPR)<br />

Oral Interpretation of Literature 3 credits<br />

THE 260<br />

Theatre Arts Practicum 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: Departmental permission and sophomore or<br />

higher class standing. Students work in supervised industry<br />

positions related to theatre arts. Practica are expected to be<br />

entry-level positions giving students an introduction to any<br />

number of fields within the theatre arts (carpentry,<br />

costuming, painting, electrical, etc.). Placements may or may<br />

not be paid positions. Students are evaluated both by their<br />

workplace supervisor and by means of a paper submitted as<br />

an end-of-course project to the monitoring faculty. A<br />

minimum of 60 hours of actual work experience is required to<br />

earn one credit. Graded S/U. (SEM).<br />

THE 360<br />

Internship in Theatre 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: Departmental permission and junior or senior<br />

class standing. Students work in supervised industry positions<br />

related to theatre arts. Internships are expected to be higher<br />

than entry level placements, and may or may not be paid<br />

positions. Students are evaluated by both their onsite<br />

supervisor and by means of a paper submitted as an end-ofcourse<br />

project to the monitoring faculty. A minimum of 60<br />

hours of actual work experience is required to earn one<br />

credit. Graded S/U. (SEM).<br />

THE 380<br />

Special Topics in Theatre 3 credits<br />

Explores specialized areas of study in theatre. Topics may<br />

include, but are not limited to, advanced studies in design or<br />

performance in theatre, dramatic literature, technical<br />

theatre, and etc. The course may be repeated for credit since<br />

subject matter varies each semester. (ADD)<br />

THE 499<br />

Independent Study in Theatre 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: Departmental permission and junior or senior<br />

class standing. <strong>Course</strong> may include guided readings, research<br />

or production projects. (SEM)<br />

THL 100<br />

The Practice of Prayer 1 credit<br />

An enrichment course with the primary emphasis on the act<br />

of praying. The focus is on personal spiritual development.<br />

Specific prayer experiences determined by individual<br />

facilitator(s) each semester. Enhancement courses, such as<br />

THL 100, may be repeated for credit, with a maximum of 12<br />

credits earned toward a bachelor degree or six credits toward<br />

an associate degree. This course does not apply toward the<br />

general education requirement in the theological and<br />

philosophical reasoning category. (SEM)<br />

THL 103<br />

Catholic Beliefs and Practices 3 credits<br />

An opportunity for students to become acquainted with,<br />

claim, or reclaim Catholic identity through a discussion of<br />

basic Catholic beliefs and practices. This course does not<br />

apply toward the general education requirement in the<br />

theological and philosophical reasoning category. (FAL)<br />
