placement results be recorded on transcripts.<br />

Foreign Language: Advanced Placement<br />

<strong>Marian</strong> <strong>University</strong> recognizes accomplishment in language<br />

learning. The placement tests in French, German, and Spanish<br />

serve to benefit students who have prior study in those<br />

languages. Students who place in FRE, GER, or SPA 220 or<br />

above, and who complete that course with a “C” or better,<br />

receive credit for the course plus six credit equivalency for<br />

intermediate level 200/201.<br />

Language achievement tests include the AP tests available at<br />

the high school level and CLEP tests at the university level.<br />

Credit may be awarded on the basis of achievement.<br />

Foreign Language and the International Student<br />

A student whose first language is other than English, and who<br />

completed high school study in the first language, may apply<br />

English courses toward the language requirement at <strong>Marian</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>. These are ENG 101, COM 101, HUM 230/231.<br />

Alternative to Foreign Language for Students with<br />

Communication Disabilities<br />

This option, approved on a case-by-case basis, is provided for<br />

those students unable to meet the foreign language general<br />

education requirement for a degree at <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The<br />

applicant must present documentation which attests to the<br />

fact that a learning disability or communication disorder<br />

would adversely affect the learning of a foreign language.<br />

Students must start the process of qualification with the<br />

director of academic support services in the Learning and<br />

Counseling Center. For more information contact the director<br />
