Introduction to Spanish II 4 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 101 or placement. Continuation of vocabulary<br />

building, grammar usage, and practice in the skills of listening<br />

comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. The course is<br />

designed to help the student engage in simple conversations<br />

on familiar topics, understand the main ideas on a familiar<br />

topic in both written and spoken Spanish, and learn how<br />

cultural differences affect one’s experience of the world. This<br />

course partially satisfies the general education requirement<br />

Introductory Spanish for the<br />

Healthcare Professional I 4 credits<br />

Introductory study of the Spanish language with special<br />

applications to the healthcare setting. Emphasis on<br />

vocabulary needs and cultural understanding to assist in<br />

working with the Spanish-speaking client. This course partially<br />

satisfies the general education requirement in the effective<br />

Introductory Spanish for the<br />

Healthcare Professional II 4 credits<br />

Prerequisite: <strong>11</strong>0 or placement or instructor permission. This<br />

course is intended for students in a healthcare program. It is a<br />

continuation of Introductory Spanish for the Healthcare<br />

Professional I. The emphasis continues to be on building basic<br />

vocabulary with specific application to medical specialties.<br />

This course partially satisfies the general education<br />

Speaking Like the Spanish 1 credit<br />

This course is designed for students interested in conversing<br />

at a novice level in Spanish. The class meets one hour per<br />

week and focuses on vocabulary acquisition and basic<br />

conversational strategies. Each class focuses on a practical<br />

situation and students converse in Spanish through guided<br />

activities. (ADD)<br />

SPA 200<br />

Intermediate Spanish I 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 102 or placement. Continued development of<br />

proficiency in communication skills. The course is designed to<br />

help the student participate in simple conversations on topics<br />

such as personal history and leisure-time activities, read<br />

consistently with increased understanding simple connected<br />

texts, write short narratives about familiar topics, and<br />

demonstrate an understanding of cultural differences and<br />

similarities in a world view. (FAL)<br />

SPA 201<br />

Intermediate Spanish II 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 200 or placement. Continues the review of basic<br />

structural elements of the Spanish language and provides a<br />

context for students to develop consistency in understanding<br />

and correct usage as they advance to connected discourse in<br />

Spanish. The course is designed to help the student initiate,<br />

sustain, and close a general conversation, read consistently<br />

with full understanding simple connected texts, and get some<br />

main ideas from texts featuring description and narration,<br />

write about personal experience, and appreciate culturebased<br />

values in the Spanish-speaking world. (SPR)<br />

SPA 210<br />

Business Practice in Spanish 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 201, placement, or instructor permission. This<br />

course is designed to establish a foundation in common<br />

business vocabulary and basic business and cultural concepts,<br />

and to engage in situational practice necessary to be<br />

successful in today’s Spanish-speaking business world. The<br />

class activities include the use of community and business<br />

resources in Indianapolis. It is intended for students with<br />

some knowledge of and ability in Spanish who wish to use the<br />

language in business-related applications. (2SO)<br />

SPA 220<br />

Spanish Prose and Poetry 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 201 or equivalent knowledge of Spanish.<br />

Development of skills required to read for information, to<br />

comprehend major ideas, and to analyze different literary<br />

forms of average difficulty. Readings are selected from works<br />

of Spanish authors from the twelfth to the twenty-first<br />

centuries and grouped according to genre. Class is conducted<br />

in Spanish. (2SE)<br />

SPA 230<br />

Basic Spanish Conversation 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 201 or equivalent knowledge of Spanish.<br />

Development of speaking and listening skills which enable<br />

students to use Spanish correctly and idiomatically in<br />

conversation and narration. Students learn and use functional<br />

expressions appropriate to typical Hispanic situations,<br />

prepare and deliver dialogues and brief oral reports, and<br />

engage in impromptu conversations on topics of current<br />

public and personal interest. Listening skills include<br />

interaction with film, video and audio recordings, as well as<br />

with speakers of native ability. (2FE)<br />

SPA 240<br />

Advanced Spanish Grammar<br />

and Composition 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 201 or equivalent knowledge of Spanish. Review<br />

of the essentials of Spanish grammar with application to<br />

composition. The course is designed to help students write<br />

social and business correspondence, take notes, write<br />

cohesive summaries and resumes, as well as narratives and<br />

descriptions of a factual nature. Required course for teacher<br />

certification. (2FO)<br />
