CDC Light Traps
Originally developed by U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the
reliable, portable trap described below incorporates nearly 30
years of design and manufacturing improvements. It is in use
worldwide for arbovirus surveys and taxonomic studies, and is
the standard, battery-operated tool for mosquito and sand fly
control sampling. This trap provides an efficient and productive
means of collecting mosquitoes, both in numbers of individuals
and in diversity of species captured.
CDC Mini Light Trap with Incandescent Light
BioQuip has developed and now manufactures a superior version
of the CDC miniature light trap.
The heavy duty ABS black trap cover is 13" (33 cm) in diameter.
A 3-foot polypropylene cord is provided for hanging. The trap
body is fabricated from 3-1/2" (9 cm) acrylic tubing, and features
stainless steel supports and screen. It has a 4-watt CM-
47 incandescent light bulb with an average life of 2,000 hours.
An 8-foot (2.4 m) power cord with standard spade tip connectors
is supplied. The motor and light draw 320 mAmps. The unit
requires a 6V DC power supply or battery (#2860 available
separately, see below).
BioQuip's unique design features include a self-closing, clear
film air gate. The air gate prevents escape of collected specimens
in the event of power loss. It also allows for use of a timing
device in collecting samples without being on site to start or stop
trap operation. There is a minimal increase on motor current
draw with this design. The air gate is an extra charge option
from other CDC trap manufacturers.
The No-See-Um fine mesh collecting bag with ripstop nylon
skirt is supported by a large rubber O-ring, fitted into a groove at
the bottom of the acrylic tube. A draw string allows specimens to
be contained in the bag safely. (BioQuip #2809C or #2809D
aspirators can be inserted into the bag to remove specimens.
The bag can then be reattached to the trap.) The collection cup
is a 16-ounce polypropylene jar with 32-mesh screen vented
bottom and modified lid. An extra plain lid is provided to seal the
jar. The trap weighs only 1.5 lbs (.6 kg).
Miniature Light Trap with UV Light
Ultraviolet light is known to attract a greater number and diversity
of Culicoides and Phlebotamine mosquito species than incandescent
light. The trap described above is also offered with
a 4-watt blacklight lamp as the light attractant, in the range of
320 - 420 n.m. Tube is 5/8" diameter x 6" long; lamp life averages
4,000 hours. The trap requires a 6-volt DC battery and
consumes about 500mAmps per hour.
BioQuip's mini light traps are supplied with air gates that keep
specimens inside the trap in the event of power loss or if the trap
is deliberately shut off to conserve power consumption. An inline
photo switch permits traps to be set to turn on in the evening
and shut off at dawn. By changing the position of the photo
switch, it is possible to adjust the time traps turn on and off.
Mosquito Traps
Collection Bottle
Rotator
2850 shown with 2836 trap
Since insect species fly at
different times of night, influenced
by time of year,
temperature, and other
factors, there is a need for
a method of separating
specimens to identify patterns
of flight and behavior.
This device allows segregating
the catch of mechanical
or pheromone
traps or a collecting device
of your own design into
eight bottles over periods
of time determined by a
programmable timer.
The design permits complete flexibility in the collection schedule,
which may range in length from a few hours (or even minutes)
to weeks. Timer accuracy is four minutes per year. An
internal backup battery maintains current date/time and switching
program for several days without external power.
The collection bottle rotator requires a 12-volt DC battery and
supplies timer-switched 12-volt DC power to the trap. Its inlet
accommodates traps with outside diameters of up to 4" (10
cm). The bottle-holding platen is precision machined from a
.25" (.64 cm) aluminum plate.
A 2836BQ or 2848BQ trap (see left) or other downdraft collecting
device is placed on the rotator with the collecting bag
placed on the platen's inlet. A timer circuit energizes a
gearmotor, which in turn rotates a new bottle under the trap at
pre-programmed intervals.
A 12-volt DC battery is required (not included); the rotator
requires only a few milliamps to operate. A pair of wires connects
the unit to a battery. The trap's wires connect to the
rotator's terminal block.
For those using a 2836BQ trap which requires a 6-volt battery,
an in-line voltage converter that transforms 12-volt DC to 6-volt
DC is required. The converter is 18" (46 cm) long, and has
terminals for connecting to a CDC trap and to the bottle rotator
connection posts. Wires are color coded for easy connection.
The rotator is 14" (35.6 cm) in diameter, and weighs 5 lbs. (2.3
kg). Installation and operation instructions are included.
Standard New Jersey
Light Trap
One of the original mosquito survey
traps developed in response to disease
outbreaks in the 1930's, the New
Jersey light trap remains among the
most productive and efficient traps
available. It indicates the species and
releative abundance of mosquito
populations, and helps formulate
hatch predictions.
Careful, sturdy trap construction ensures
many years of service. The
body and top are fabricated of stainless
steel. All trap components, including
120V AC electrical system,
fan, and 25-watt lamp, are manufactured
in the U.S. A chain for hanging,
30 x 30 mesh stainless steel interior funnel, and 1/4" mesh
excluding screen are provided. The trapping container is a onepint
polypropylene jar.
The trap may be equipped with an optional photocell, or programmable
7-day, 24-hour timer, greatly reducing labor hours
required to service the trap.
Overall height is 25", top is 15"; trap cylinder is 9.5" (64, 38, 24
cm). UPS oversize (30 lb.) rate applies.
