FIELD<br />
CDC Light Traps<br />
Originally developed by U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the<br />
reliable, portable trap described below incorporates nearly 30<br />
years of design and manufacturing improvements. It is in use<br />
worldwide for arbovirus surveys and taxonomic studies, and is<br />
the standard, battery-operated tool for mosquito and sand fly<br />
control sampling. This trap provides an efficient and productive<br />
means of collecting mosquitoes, both in numbers of individuals<br />
and in diversity of species captured.<br />

CDC Mini Light Trap with Incandescent Light<br />
<strong>BioQuip</strong> has developed and now manufactures a superior version<br />
of the CDC miniature light trap.<br />
The heavy duty ABS black trap cover is 13" (33 cm) in diameter.<br />
A 3-foot polypropylene cord is provided for hanging. The trap<br />
body is fabricated from 3-1/2" (9 cm) acrylic tubing, and features<br />
stainless steel supports and screen. It has a 4-watt CM-<br />
47 incandescent light bulb with an average life of 2,000 hours.<br />
An 8-foot (2.4 m) power cord with standard spade tip connectors<br />
is supplied. The motor and light draw 320 mAmps. The unit<br />
requires a 6V DC power supply or battery (#2860 available<br />
separately, see below).<br />
<strong>BioQuip</strong>'s unique design features include a self-closing, clear<br />
film air gate. The air gate prevents escape of collected specimens<br />
in the event of power loss. It also allows for use of a timing<br />
device in collecting samples without being on site to start or stop<br />
trap operation. There is a minimal increase on motor current<br />
draw with this design. The air gate is an extra charge option<br />
from other CDC trap manufacturers.<br />
The No-See-Um fine mesh collecting bag with ripstop nylon<br />
skirt is supported by a large rubber O-ring, fitted into a groove at<br />
the bottom of the acrylic tube. A draw string allows specimens to<br />
be contained in the bag safely. (<strong>BioQuip</strong> #2809C or #2809D<br />
aspirators can be inserted into the bag to remove specimens.<br />
The bag can then be reattached to the trap.) The collection cup<br />
is a 16-ounce polypropylene jar with 32-mesh screen vented<br />
bottom and modified lid. An extra plain lid is provided to seal the<br />
jar. The trap weighs only 1.5 lbs (.6 kg).<br />

Miniature Light Trap with UV Light<br />
Ultraviolet light is known to attract a greater number and diversity<br />
of Culicoides and Phlebotamine mosquito species than incandescent<br />
light. The trap described above is also offered with<br />
a 4-watt blacklight lamp as the light attractant, in the range of<br />
320 - 420 n.m. Tube is 5/8" diameter x 6" long; lamp life averages<br />
4,000 hours. The trap requires a 6-volt DC battery and<br />
consumes about 500mAmps per hour.<br />
<strong>BioQuip</strong>'s mini light traps are supplied with air gates that keep<br />
specimens inside the trap in the event of power loss or if the trap<br />
is deliberately shut off to conserve power consumption. An inline<br />
photo switch permits traps to be set to turn on in the evening<br />
and shut off at dawn. By changing the position of the photo<br />
switch, it is possible to adjust the time traps turn on and off.<br />

Since insect species fly at<br />
different times of night, influenced<br />
by time of year,<br />
temperature, and other<br />
factors, there is a need for<br />
a method of separating<br />
specimens to identify patterns<br />
of flight and behavior.<br />
This device allows segregating<br />
the catch of mechanical<br />
or pheromone<br />
traps or a collecting device<br />
of your own design into<br />
eight bottles over periods<br />
of time determined by a<br />
programmable timer.<br />
The design permits complete flexibility in the collection schedule,<br />
which may range in length from a few hours (or even minutes)<br />
to weeks. Timer accuracy is four minutes per year. An<br />
internal backup battery maintains current date/time and switching<br />
program for several days without external power.<br />
The collection bottle rotator requires a 12-volt DC battery and<br />
supplies timer-switched 12-volt DC power to the trap. Its inlet<br />
accommodates traps with outside diameters of up to 4" (10<br />
cm). The bottle-holding platen is precision machined from a<br />
.25" (.64 cm) aluminum plate.<br />
A 2836BQ or 2848BQ trap (see left) or other downdraft collecting<br />
device is placed on the rotator with the collecting bag<br />
placed on the platen's inlet. A timer circuit energizes a<br />
gearmotor, which in turn rotates a new bottle under the trap at<br />
pre-programmed intervals.<br />
A 12-volt DC battery is required (not included); the rotator<br />
requires only a few milliamps to operate. A pair of wires connects<br />
the unit to a battery. The trap's wires connect to the<br />
rotator's terminal block.<br />
For those using a 2836BQ trap which requires a 6-volt battery,<br />
an in-line voltage converter that transforms 12-volt DC to 6-volt<br />
DC is required. The converter is 18" (46 cm) long, and has<br />
terminals for connecting to a CDC trap and to the bottle rotator<br />
connection posts. Wires are color coded for easy connection.<br />
The rotator is 14" (35.6 cm) in diameter, and weighs 5 lbs. (2.3<br />
kg). Installation and operation instructions are included.<br />

One of the original mosquito survey<br />
traps developed in response to disease<br />
outbreaks in the 1930's, the New<br />
Jersey light trap remains among the<br />
most productive and efficient traps<br />
available. It indicates the species and<br />
releative abundance of mosquito<br />
populations, and helps formulate<br />
hatch predictions.<br />
Careful, sturdy trap construction ensures<br />
many years of service. The<br />
body and top are fabricated of stainless<br />
steel. All trap components, including<br />
120V AC electrical system,<br />
fan, and 25-watt lamp, are manufactured<br />
in the U.S. A chain for hanging,<br />
30 x 30 mesh stainless steel interior funnel, and 1/4" mesh<br />
excluding screen are provided. The trapping container is a onepint<br />
polypropylene jar.<br />
The trap may be equipped with an optional photocell, or programmable<br />
7-day, 24-hour timer, greatly reducing labor hours<br />
required to service the trap.<br />
Overall height is 25", top is 15"; trap cylinder is 9.5" (64, 38, 24<br />
