12 Volt DC Timer
BioQuip 7
Designed to extend versatility for night light collecting, the BioQuip DC timer was inspired by a 1964
article by D. K. Edwards, Canada Department of Forestry. The concept has been expanded to provide
multiple signals for operating a 12-volt DC light or trap to attract night flying insects.
The simple, yet highly practical design lends itself to wide variation in trap operation. The timer can be
used with any BioQuip 12-volt DC light. It turns a light ‘on’ and ‘off’ for one or more predetermined periods
from 12 minutes up to 24 hours. Setting the timer is easily accomplished by cutting “windows” in a clock
face/program card. Mylar program cards are held securely in place where needed by four button
magnets.
This timer is limited only by the user’s requirements or power supply capability, since collecting lights
can be operated while the user is absent. The 24-hour military clock dial prevents the timer from being
set for daylight hours unless specifically intended.
The timer motor features a quartz clock motor. The housing is a secure aluminum box 4 x 4 x 2" with
clear acrylic window and 12-volt DC connectors on 18" leads. The top and bottom are secured with
knurled screw fasteners. An AA battery, six program cards, and instructions are included.
Solar Panel, Timers
Universal Programmable Timing Switch This versatile electronic programming device facilitates scheduling a wide variety of
applications for the operation of electrical equipment. A series of up to 42 independent
commands may be programmed for day of the week, hour and minute. The switch can
handle loads of up to 16 amps and is wired for 12-volt DC operation.
The clock is a solid-state quartz-based timer accurate to four minutes per year. An
internal backup ni-cad battery maintains the current date/time and switching program
for several days without external power. Minimum on or off time is one minute; maximum
is one week. Up to 42 pairs of on/off events can be programmed and it is possible
to have the same program of up to eight on/off events scheduled for each day of the
week.
The switch is contained in an unbreakable, water-resistant polypropylene cylinder, 3"
diameter x 2.5", with 6 feet of input cord and 4 feet of output cord. It is protected from
overloads with an internal fuse. Operating and programming instructions are included.
Weight is 14 oz.
Solar Panel
The Solarex photovoltaic cell provides a welcome
alternative to conventional power generation, making
night collecting possible in areas where electricity is
unreliable or non-existent. It converts light energy
from the sun into DC electricity to charge a battery,
using a technology that is silent, non-polluting and
portable, with no moving parts to wear out.
The lightweight panel is made from EVA laminates
with anodized aluminum backing. Dimensions are
17.6 x 19.6 x .4" (44.7 x 49.8 x 1 cm), small enough
for easy storage.
The durable solar panel has a peak output of 1.11
amps and 16.8 volts, 18.6 watts (typical) and 27 watts
(minimum). A 10-foot output cord is attached. It
recharges a 12 amp-hour battery or power pack in
six to eight hours of ‘normal’ sunshine, depending on
battery charge depletion. The panel converts sunlight
into electricity even on cloudy days. It is weather
resistant, and can be secured to a vehicle’s roof while
traveling to the next collecting location.
The panel can be used with the 2861 battery pack or
a 12-volt automotive battery to provide current for
BioQuip DC lights and DC light traps. Do not charge
and discharge the panel simultaneously without using
the sequencing charger listed below. Instructions
are included, and a one year manufacturer’s limited
warranty is provided. Shipping weight: 6-1/2 lbs.
The automatic sequencing charger is a compact, efficient
solid state battery charge regulator for use
with the solar panel. It optimizes charging performance
while providing overcharge protection of storage
batteries. It includes a blocking diode to prevent
minor loss of of battery discharge through the panel
at night, a light to indicate when charging is occurring,
and a low voltage disconnect to protect the battery
from deep discharge.
This economical trap provides a simple method for passive trapping of ground insects and other
arthropods. When used with ethylene glycol (radiator antifreeze), it keeps specimens in good condition
for extended periods between trap servicing.
The trap includes two white plastic pint containers, 4-1/2 x 3", placed in the ground so that the rim is
flush with the soil surface. The upper container is lifted out to remove specimens, and the bottom
container stays in the ground. A white plastic top, 10-1/4" diameter, deflects rainfall and provides
shade.
The trap top is secured with three 16-penny construction nails pushed through pre-punched holes in
the top and into the ground. Clearance of about 1/2" above the containers is provided by three
aluminum spacers and washers placed on nails under the top. (Ethylene glycol not included.)
