Lightsticks
No biologist should be out in the
field at night without Lightsticks
for general or emergency lighting.
Weighing only one ounce,
Light-sticks are a safe, convenient
source of 360 N cold light
and provide better area light
than a flashlight. No outside
combustion or heat is required
to activate. Completely waterproof,
they may be used underwater
and in rainy conditions.
The AmeriGlo Lightstick consists
of an outer and inner capsule,
each containing a chemical
solution. By flexing the plastic wand, an ampule containing
one solution is broken, and the two solutions are mixed, producing
light emission. Lightsticks are 6" long x 3/4" dia. (15.2 x
1.9 cm), available in five colors: green, yellow, red, blue, and
white. They emit light for approximately 12 hours after activation,
except for blue and white which last 8 hours. Shelf life is
up to four years if the outer, foil wrapper has not been damaged.
The effectiveness of Lightsticks in attracting aquatic insects is
still being debated. Several vector control agencies have tested
them for their ability to attract underwater organisms, including
mosquito larvae. They are the recommended light source for
BioQuip's Aquatic Light Trap (see right).
Stream Flowtanks
Flowtanks are unique devices
providing a miniature stream environment.
Originally designed
for rearing aquatic larvae, they have
a variety of other uses including:
$ Creating stream microcosm for testing ecological theory or
making behavioral observations
$ Demonstration or display tanks for classroom or museum
$ Student science projects
Easily installed, Flowtanks convert a standard aquarium into a
stream tank without complicated, noisy water pumps or paddle
wheels because power is provided by the air supply. They are
constructed of Plexiglass and vinyl plastic and are secured in
place with gravel.
An air pump, not provided, powers the Flowtank lifting water
vertically and accelerating it horizontally. Larger air pumps create
faster currents. Large vibrator pumps (Whisper 700) create
currents of 4 in/sec., (30.5 cm/sec.). Units are designed for
channels 5" wide, with counterclockwise flow. They are easily
maintained because there are no moving parts or screens to
clog. Instructions for assembly and installation are included.
Laboratory Model Flowtanks
The original Flowtank, designed for durability and flexibility in
research applications. Excellent for microcosms, rearing, and
bioassay. Dimensions: 12" long, 5-3/8" wide, 8" deep (30.5 x 14
x 20 cm).
4440B Laboratory Flowtank, for compressor air 58.55
pump, 18" (46 cm) minimum tank length
Display Model Flowtank
An easy way for museums, zoos and schools to stimulate interest
in aquatic systems by creating a dynamic display or demonstration
stream. Flowtank is 23" long, 5-3/8" wide, 11" deep (58
x 14 28 cm); fits aquarium 29" long, 12" wide, 11" deep.
Aquatic
Light Trap
BioQuip’s Aquatic Light Trap was
designed to improve collecting of
mosquito larvae. It facilitates
advance determinations of
emergence time and species. It also
attracts a variety of other organisms
such as Dytiscidae water beetles,
and is not limited to aquatic
environments.
The trap is submerged on the
bottom of a canal, pond, or flooded
rice field. Using an AmeriGlo
Lightstick (see left) hooked inside
the trap, mosquito larvae are attracted to the light, entering
through openings on four sides. Studies indicate an improved
cost effective factor when compared to hand dipping for larvae,
especially in vegetation choked waterways.
Because the trap approaches the specific gravity of fresh
water, about 8 oz. of ballast (such as stones) is required to
keep it resting securely on a canal or pond bottom. The trap
also can be used in a floating position to attract surface dwelling
aquatic insects and other organisms by reducing the ballast
and forming an airlock under the lid.
Trap body is heavy duty, molded ABS plastic, 8-1/4" (21 cm) high
and 10-1/4" (26 cm) across, with interior painted white to increase
attracting capability. Removable, clear plastic funnels are
attached to the four 4" side ports with polyethylene rings. Trap
lid is secured with a crossover bungee cord. Weight is 2 lbs., 6 oz.
Freshwater Environments
The two-meter emergence trap is a BioQuip exclusive. Carefully
fabricated of Lumite screening, it is hung above a stream or
other body of water to capture a wide variety of imago insects
as they emerge from the water to take flight.
The large trap is two meters square and 2.4 meters high. Front
and back are cut .4 meter shorter than sides to allow water to
flow through without obstruction. A 1.2-meter opening with Velcro
closure is provided on the front (upstream) side allowing the
user to enter the trap and refasten the opening from inside.
Sufficient headroom allows the user to collect newly emerged
insects with a small net or other device such as BioQuip's 2820B
Insect Vac (see page 57).
The peak is supported by a 2" steel ring, and heavy fabric loops
are provided at each corner to keep the trap spread open in the
desired position. The trap may be supported from trees with
stretched lines, by a 2"x 2" wood "A" frame, or 3/4" EMT electrical
conduit tubular frame.
The trap is available in two mesh sizes of Lumite screening:
$ 2828 20 x 20 mesh Lumite screen, 956 micron openings
$ 2829 32 x 32 mesh Lumite screen, 530 micron openings
Please allow four weeks for delivery after placing your order.
