Malaise Trap
Carrying Case
2875AG
BioQuip Malaise traps are effective 24-hour collectors of any insect
species that flies. They enable entomologists to conduct random
survey sampling for migration, population and ecological studies.
Optimum location for set up is in natural flyway such as streambed,
wooded area opening, wash or gully. Insects encounter netting sides
of the trap during normal flight and are directed to crawl upward into
the collecting chamber. The sloping top prevents escape from the
upper area.
Traps may be erected and left unattended for long periods of time
with periodic servicing of the collecting chamber. Because of their
designs, Malaise traps collect insects flying from all directions as air
movement changes. They are especially effective for collection of
Diptera and Hymenoptera.
2875A and 2875AG traps are square in configuration with four central
vanes to stop insect flight. Model 2875D is ‘H’ shaped, based on
the Townes pattern (Ent. News 83:239-247, 1972) with the collecting
head located at the top.
The tent portion is made of white or green tricot polyester netting,
carefully sewn and reinforced at the seams with nylon carpet tape.
White netting has been used in BioQuip Malaise trap tents for many
years. Dark green netting is also listed for those who feel that white
tents reflect too much sunlight and influence quantity of specimens or
number of species captured. It blends well with most backgrounds
and may assure a more representative sampling than white netting.
The dry-type collecting head is an 8" x 4" diameter clear acrylic tube
with inverted truncated funnel at the bottom to direct insects into the
chamber and prevent escape. Permanently mounted bungee cords
are used to attach the cap to the collecting head, and to secure the
collecting head to the trap socket. The collecting chamber is easily
removed for access to specimens or for recharging by unhooking
Durable bag is designed
for transporting and storing
Malaise traps, with
ample space for all components
of any trap described
above. A canvas
inner bag is provided for
metal pole segments to
prevent damage to tent
netting or acrylic collecting
head. Forest green
bag is constructed of water-resistant durable polyester, with
double zipper across full length, vinyl piping around ends, and
double nylon web carrying handles. Size: 24" long x 12" diameter,
folds flat.
This case is also ideal for carrying or stowing 24" collecting net
segments, 15-watt BL collecting lights, and other long or bulky
items which are difficult to pack and carry when traveling.
the bungee loops. A chamber for cyanide or Vapona is built into the
head.
Liquid killing agents such as ethyl acetate or acetone must not be
used in the collecting head as these chemicals will fracture or otherwise
degrade the plastic. Ethyl alcohol in dilution greater than 20%
will cause the acrylic to fracture.
Center support poles are swaged aluminum tube segments. A 12"
steel spike is partially inserted into the bottom segment, with the point
driven into the ground for center pole stability. Nylon cord tie-downs
and plastic tent stakes are provided to secure tautness in set up.
FIELD
Designed for use with any of the 2875
malaise traps described above, this
sturdy malaise trap collecting head
consists of a capped 1/2-gallon translucent
polyethylene container with an
inverted funnel cemented in place with
silicone adhesive. The 7/8" funnel
opening projects about 3" from the bottom
of the jar.
The collector is about 8-1/2" high x 6"
in diameter, and fits the socket on the
top of 2875 traps. It holds approximately
1 liter of alcohol or other fluid,
such as soapy water. When used as
a dry collector, a Vapona strip or ammonium
carbonate may be used as a killing agent. A carrying
handle is provided on the top of the jar.
