1121 Series Collecting Jars

Glass jars with white metal caps have a layer of porous plaster
poured on the jar bottom. They are shipped without being charged
to allow shipment through the mail. Jars in this series are listed
in four sizes, and are the preferred type for beginning or young
collectors.
Ethyl acetate, commonly used killing agent (listed below) is sold
separately. To prepare for use, pour about 1 oz. of ethyl acetate
into jars, screw on lid and wait 20 minutes until plaster is fully
saturated, then drain off any remaining liquid. Recharge as
needed.

Gaining acceptance by collectors as a dispatching agent, ammonium
carbonate is a dry, practical and safer alternative to
liquid killing agents. The powder is not poisonous or flammable,
but can be irritating to the lungs and corrosive to muscous
membranes.
Ammonia gas is liberated when a small amount of powder is
exposed to oxygen. The release of fumes is enhanced by wetting
the powder with water. The powder can also be used in other
collecting traps as a killing agent.
Ammonium carbonate is light sensitive and must be stored in an
airtight container. Packed in a polypropylene jar, there are no
shipping restrictions for this product.
For use with 1112 collecting vial described below; not for use
with 1120 and 1121 Series jars.

Disposable Collecting Vial
Convenient collecting vial is intended
for use with ammonium carbonate only.
The 2-ounce pocket-sized vial is
1-1/4" in diameter, 3" high, and made of
clear styrene with white plastic screwon
lid. It is supplied with a 5/16"-thick
polyethylene foam plug to contain the
dry killing agent in one end. Supplied
without being charged; see ammonium
carbonate described above.

Using a cartridge to contain the killing agent was an original
BioQuip concept in 1959. A porous hard plaster cartridge securely
encloses the killing agent yet permits fumes to seep
through into the jar. The cartridge screws into an inner metal lid
riveted to the widemouth jar lid, and does not crumble or break
with normal use or in humid conditions.
Clear glass jars with metal lids have red skull and crossbones
labels for safety. They are shipped without being charged to
allow shipment through the mails. Cyanide crystals (not sold by
BioQuip) or cotton saturated with 1185 ethyl acetate may be
used as killing agents. Ammonium carbonate is not a suitable
killing agent for these jars as it deteriorates the plaster cartridge.

Pocket Collecting Jar
The 1120P pocket collecting jar is large enough to accept most
specimens. It is 3-3/8" long and 2" in diameter with a mouth
opening of 1-1/2". A small rechargeable plaster cartridge screws
into an inner jar lid, and may be filled with cotton saturated with
ethyl acetate or with cyanide.
This jar requires little space. Several may be carried conveniently
in a backpack or 1126 field collecting bag (page 68).

Plaster/Plastic Collecting
Jar Cartridge
BioQuip’s innovation for those
using cyanide in killing jars is
a combination plastic & plaster
cartridge. Field tested item
was designed as alternative
to plaster cartridges which may degrade with a buildup of liquid
when cyanide is used.
Cartridge body is cast in rigid urethane, providing a stronger,
safer product to handle when recharging. Cartridge bottom is
hard porous plaster through which cyanide gas passes into jar.
This type of cartridge lasts indefinitely and is well suited for
collecting in humid climates. (Not compatible with ethyl acetate.)

Designed for frequent occasions when the
collector needs an extra hand, this caddy
keeps your 32 oz. collecting jar close at
hand in the field by inserting the jar in a
pouch strapped to the waist where it is immediately
available. The convenient caddy
is carefully sewn from 1/4" nylon ace netting,
allowing the user to see inside the jar without removing it
from its holder. An adjustable 1" cotton web belt is provided, with
black plastic snap catch and a spring loaded draw closure,
drawing tight just under the lid. Collecting jar not included.
