Acorn, The Nature Nut Videos:
Making Science Fun
John Acorn (his real name) is both an entomologist and the
great Canadian troubadour of the natural sciences whose TV
series appears on PBS stations across the U.S. and Canada.
His inspiring, charming presentations rank with the best about
entomology for young people. Videos from TV segments feature
beautiful camera work, with Acorn teaching, demonstrating,
and singing about insects and natural life. Watch him as
he works in the field with his chosen arthropod for the day,
showing how the animal lives, why it is important, finishing up
with a song about it played on his guitar.
These entertaining, educational videos are a good long-term
investment for students as well as for adults who want to learn
more. VHS videos are 24 minutes in length.
Butterflies & Flutter-Bys
Discusses butterfly watching and gardening, and features stunning
images of Anglewings, Fritillaries, a territorial Silver-Spotted Skipper.
See Acorn’s interpretation of the butterfly net as a Samurai sword.
Carabid Before It Gets Away
What’s a carabid? It’s a ground beetle, of course. In most parts of the
world there are as many species of ground beetles as there are
birds. Too bad so few people appreciate them, but isn’t it handy that
the Nature Nut is one of those overlooked few?
Caterpillars
If you like butterflies and moths, then you have to love caterpillars
since you can’t have one without the other. Video shows how to find,
identify and rear caterpillars.
Digger Wasps
Acorn and guest Jack Wojcicki introduce the unusual lifestyle of the
digger wasp, a crazy critter that not only digs burrows in sand and
lives underground, but captures prey by delivering a paralyzing sting.
Dragonflies
Fast, colorful, and they’re just about everywhere. This video looks at
dragonflies and damselflies, from egg to larva to fast-flying adult.
Grasshoppers
Farmers hate them, fishermen use them for bait; they come in plagues
and make chirping sounds. Just what are grasshoppers anyway,
and what are they doing down there in the grass?
Scarab Beetles Then & Now
With two of the world’s top scarab beetle experts, Acorn explores the
Saskatchewan prairies in search of these nifty critters. From beliefs
of ancient Egyptians to writings of naturalist Jean-Henri Fabre, they
cover the topic, sharing their contagious enthusiasm for scarabs.
Nature Photography: Close-Ups
For people pursuing nature with a camera, video demonstrates closeup
techniques, using both 35mm SLR equipment and “the world’s
crummiest camera”. Good work is possible on any budget.
EDUCATIONAL
Nature Photography: Telephoto
For natural subjects too small or far away for normal photo techniques,
video shows how to choose a telephoto lens, get close to
your subjects, and hold the camera steady for best results. Special
segment on sitting in “blinds” and stalking wild creatures.
Wasps, Ants & Society in General
A look at the weird and wonderful lives of ants, bees, wasps, and a
comparison of their societies to that of humans. Are their societies
like ours, or are they more efficient and cooperative like science
fiction would have us believe?
Butterflies of the Rainforest
Travel to Costa Rica and explore colorful rainforest butterflies. Some
are transparent, some are drunkards, others are the size of a saucer
and attracted to blue handkerchiefs! With fake heads, warning colors
and a taste for rotten bananas mixed with raw fish and beer, these
butterflies make the one back home seem tame.
Click Beetles
Acorn travels from western Canada poplar forests to Arizona deserts
to Central American rainforests to find out if click beetles have perfected
the ultimate sit-up. What can we learn from them about “killer
abs,” and how about the glowing click beetle with its two headlights?
Praying Mantis
Acorn teams up with mantis expert Cynthia Mazer to look at the
Praying Mantis. It has inspired the Mantis style of Kung Fu, and a
whole gamut of scientific research. Does the female really eat the
male’s head while they mate, and why doesn’t he see it coming?
Night Buggin’
After late summer rains begin, night bugs of the Arizona desert emerge.
Acorn and guest entomologist Dr. David Maddison hang a large backlit
bed sheet in the desert and see what shows up and crawls up.
Scorpions, They Look Real Cool
The Tucson area is renowned for scorpions. Acorn searches here
for deadly poisonous Centruroides, and sets up a terrarium for a
huge Emperor Scorpion as well. Friends from the University of Arizona
help out with the search, and with the song as well.
