Entomology Instructional Videos & DVDs
Informative programs in VHS video or DVD format are narrated by
Dr. Charles Cole, entomologist from Texas A & M Research Center
with many year's of experience in developing educational entomology
programs for training extension agents and young people. The
seven topics include Insect Identification; two on Practice Identification;
Arthropod Identification; Collection and Preservation of Insects;
Insect Metamorphosis and Structure; and Identification and Classification
of Insects. Student quizzes or study guides for all of the
following programs can be downloaded from the producer's website
at no charge.
Insect Identification Formerly available as three separate videos,
information has been combined into one video or DVD consisting of
three sections:
(1) Live-action of 18 orders and corresponding common species.
Outlines identifying characteristics (mouth parts, antennae, and other
unique features) for Collembola, Thysanura, Emphemeroptera,
Odonata, Plecoptera, Orthoptera, Blattaria, Mantodea, Phasmida,
Dermaptera, Isoptera, Psocoptera, Phtiraptera, Thysanoptera,
Neuroptera, Mecoptera, Trichoptera, and Siphonaptera;
(2) Explains why bugs are insects but not all insects are bugs. Features
three extensive insect orders—Hemiptera (16 common species),
Homoptera (9 common species), and Coleoptera (33 species)—and
identifying characteristics for each order;
(3) Combines live-action of well-known insects with highly specialized
species from three orders: Lepidoptera (40 butterflies, moths,
skippers); Diptera (15 species); Hymenoptera (13 ants, bees, horntails,
sawflies, wasps).
Entomology Series Videos & DVD's
Exciting series features live action micro- and macro-photography,
showing living insects in their natural surroundings.
Prepared with leading entomologists, each program is a valuable
learning tool, focusing on a unique facet of entomology,
presenting essential topics in a manner that keeps both beginning
and advanced students, and their teachers, interested.
Insect Structure, Function & Metamorphosis Examines three
types of metamorphosis: gradual, incomplete, and complete, with
insect examples in each group. Explores basic structure of insects,
including exoskeleton, antennae, eyes, mouthparts, leg parts, digestive
and reproductive tracts. Presents insect defenses such as high
reproductive rates, camouflage, mimicry, spines. 24 minutes.
Insect Orders, Classification & Identification Features scientific
names and main characteristics of each of the 26 main orders
of insects. They include primitive insects such as silverfish, bristletails,
springtails; winged insects such as mayflies, dragonflies,
stoneflies, grasshoppers, earwigs, termites, true bugs, cicadas
and leafhoppers; and nerve-winged insects including beetles, butterflies
& moths, bees, ants, wasps, flies and fleas. A great building
block for entomology students. 24 minutes.
Arthropods Learn about the largest group of animals, those with
jointed legs: the phylum Arthropoda. Examines the five classes: insects,
arachnids, centipedes, millipedes, and crustaceans. Characteristics
of each class are illustrated, and effective examples are
shown. Arachnids include spiders, mites, ticks, scorpions, whip scorpi-
