Sampling & Collecting Equipment
Surber
Bottom
Sampler
The Surber
Design Bottom
Sampler
collects
aquatic insects
and
other macroorganisms
found on the
bottom of moving streams at depths from 12 - 18" (30 - 45 cm).
It is used to determine larval insect population levels which are
indicators of pollution in streams and watersheds. It is also used
to monitor availability of food for fish, and to chart variation in
aquatic life from different locations in the same stream.
The durable netting filter is made of amber Lumite screening,
available in two mesh sizes:
$ 20 x 20 mesh Lumite screen, size of openings 965 microns
(approximately 1 mm)
$ 52 x 52 mesh Lumite screen, size of openings 280 microns
Closely woven white polyester is used for the top and side
panels. Both fabrics are resistant to ultra violet light. Overall
length of the sampling bag is 27" (68 cm).
The rugged 12" (30 cm) square frame is constructed of 1/8 x
1/2" solid hard brass. It is placed on a stream bottom so that
water flows into the 12" square vertical portion of the frame and
through the collecting bag, trapping organisms dislodged from
the substrate. The upright portion of the frame unlocks for flat
storage and portability. The sampler folds to approximately 12.5
x 12.5 x 2", and weighs 4 lbs.
To prevent the sampler from sinking into a soft or uneven stream
bottom with resulting loss of definition to the 12-square inch
area, two metal bottom extension frames are available. Extension
frames to support the sampler are 3" and 6" in depth,
fabricated of 22 gauge steel with heavy cadmium plating. The
more appropriate extension is selected to support the sampler
depending on composition of the substrate.
Secchi Disk
Used to determine
turbidity or degree of
visibility in freshwater
environments.The
weighted black and
white quadrant plastic
disk has a diameter of
20 cm. It is lowered into
the water on a braided, stretch-resistant line that is marked
every half meter and at every meter up to 20 meters. Weight:
two pounds.
Armored Thermometer
Precision, non-mercury thermometer, furnished in a protective
plastic jacket with window opening, provides accurate temperature
readings for water samples. Engraved graduations on the
white tubing center increase readability over the full range of -5°
to 45°C in .5° increments. Length: 6-1/2" (16.5 cm).
Water Sampler
FRESHWATER ENVIRONMENTS
Sturdy, clear acrylic
chamber collects representative
water
samples, including dissolved
oxygen water
samples, at depths
from one to 20 meters.
Water is collected in a removable inner glass tube which is
overflowed up to 10 times to insure an accurate, representative
sample. Two extra test tube inner chambers, 6-3/4" long, with
cork stoppers are supplied.
The water sampler outfit includes a cork stopper and rod for
simple removal of inner glass tubes, a clip for thermometer
attachment when temperature readings are to be obtained, and
a two pound lead weight which is attached to the bottom of the
sampler for rapid descent and minimal amount of drift due to
currents. A short harness and swiveled hook for attaching line
at the top is also provided.
Overall dimensions are 9 x 3-1/4" (23 x 8 cm); shipping weight is
4 lbs. Procedures for collecting water samples are supplied.
Sampling
Dredge
Stainless steel dredge is used to collect benthic organisms or
sediment on soft bottoms (sand or silt). A simple trigger holds
the sampler open while lowering to cover a uniform area of
approximately 7-1/2 x 5-1/2" (19 x 14 cm). Scissor design closes
the sampler, retrieving a volume of sediment to the surface for
analysis. When closed, the sample remains undisturbed as it is
raised to the surface. Careful release into a pan distributes
sediment approximately as it was on the bottom.
A sturdy harness line is provided with the dredge, which weighs
6 lbs.
Plankton Net
Cone-shaped net is made of 10 mesh, 153 micron
nylon cloth, which permits water to pass
through but is fine enough to filter out organisms.
Minute plankton are collected and can be observed
in the removable, clear conical tube (50
ml.) at the end of the net. Two 50 ml. graduated
tubes are provided. A sturdy stainless steel ring
and harness keep the mouth of the net open
while it is being pulled through the water. It has a
5" diameter mouth, and is 15" long. See also
Calibrated Line &
Sounding Lead
Marked from 0 to 20 meters, this stretch-resistant line is made
of braided #5 polyester cord. It has a brass spring clip for easy
attachment to the water sampler, Secchi disk or plankton nets
described above. Line wraps conveniently around an ethafoam
block which floats to prevent accidental loss. Includes a twopound
lead weight.
