Butterfly Bait Traps
Mercury Vapor Lights
NOTE: Glass in mercury vapor lamp bulbs becomes hot during
use. Hot lamp bulbs cannot tolerate temperature shock from
rain or mist, and break when they come in contact with moisture.
BioQuip highly recommends using rain shields with 2818, 2816
and 2819 mercury vapor lights. No warranty is made for mercury
vapor lights if customer has not also purchased a 2818B
or 2819B rain shield and used it during operation of the light.
There is no warranty for mercury vapor lamp bulbs.

Baited traps are used in tropical environments to collect, study or photograph
specific kinds of butterflies. The design takes advantage of a
butterfly’s natural tendency to fly upward after feeding or when startled.
Specimens are removed from a gray fiberglass screen cylinder with 22"
zippered side opening. The cylinder has non-rusting 15" rings at top and
bottom, sturdy cloth top, and nylon rope hanger. The 16" square plywood
base supports bait container and provides a landing platform for incoming
butterflies. It is attached to the cylinder with ‘S’ hooks, leaving an entry
opening over 1".
Two models of these fully collapsible bait traps are available. Both extend
to 36" high, and are 15" in diameter. The 1420C cone trap features a 12"
inverted cone with 4" opening, and three rope tethers with Velcro tabs to
hold cone in position. The 1420L lip trap has a 3.5" screen lip at the
bottom attached to an inner metal ring providing an 8" opening.
Often referred to as Agrias traps due to their success in capturing that
genus, these bait traps are also used to collect other types of butterflies.
They are compact (16" square x 2.25" high when collapsed) and lightweight
(2.25 lbs.), easily packed in a suitcase or shoulder pack for travel.

black light spectrum provides
the collector access
to specimens not attracted
solely to black light. It includes
an unfrosted 175
watt lamp from the blue
end of the MV spectrum,
screwed into a porcelain
mogul socket, separated
from the vented aluminum
ballast box by 10 feet of
electrical cord. A connector
for easy disconnect of
the lamp from the ballast is
also included for simpler packing or connection to the 2818B
rain shield (see right). The light and socket may be mounted on
a camera tripod.
The ballast in this light is made specifically for a 175 watt bulb; do
not use a bulb of any other wattage. The unit can be operated
only on North American 120 volt AC electrical current.

Shoulder Bag for Mercury
Vapor Light
For those traveling with or storing
2818 mercury vapor lights, this attractive
shoulder carry bag is just
about perfect. The 175-watt light,
ballast, cord, and 2818B rain shield
fit snugly into the 10 x 11 x 6.5"
space.
The well-constructed black bag is
made of 600 D. heavy-duty polyester,
with self-repairable nylon zippers
and a 1.5-inch-wide, rubberpadded,
adjustable shoulder strap. There is a 9.5 x 7.5 x 1"
zippered pocket on the front, and a full-width compartment on
the back with Velcro closure. A four-inch PVC insulated tube is
provided to help protect the lamp from shock or accidental breakage
when traveling.

Mercury Vapor Lamp, 160 Watt
This mercury vapor lamp is especially wellsuited
for insect collecting when compared
to other MV lights requiring bulky and more
expensive apparatus for ballasting or current
conversion. Long favored in Europe for night collecting,
mercury vapor lights are increasingly preferred by North American
collectors who wish to attract a more varied selection of
insects than those attracted by the black light band of the color
spectrum.
The clear, 160-watt, 120-volt AC 2819 MV lamp is self-ballasted.
With electronic components within the glass, the user can twist
the lamp into any conventional medium base electrical socket.

Rain Shields for
Mercury Vapor Lights

Rain shields are designed expressly
for use with 2818, 2816 and 2819 mercury
vapor lights. They protect lights
against breakage caused by temperature shock from rain or
mist in all but high wind conditions resulting in horizontal rain
patterns.
Shields consist of a transparent 2-mil polyethylene skirt, 10"
long, clamped to double wooden rings at top and bottom. The
design permits outward flow of heat at the top under a 10"
diameter aluminum cap mounted above the shield. They include
a porcelain socket, and metal wire guard to protect the electrical
cord when hung from a branch or collecting sheet. Shields are
fully collapsible for transport. Two extra polyethylene skirts, which
may be replaced without the need for tools, are included.
The 2818B is used to protect 2818 and 2816 mercury vapor
lamps from moisture. It has a porcelain mogul base socket, a
connector to the ballast box, and metal hanger with cord protector.
Shield collapses to 3.5" high; weighs 1.25 pounds.
The 2819B is used with the 2819 self-ballasted mercury vapor
lamp. It contains a porcelain medium base lamp socket, off/on
switch, 6 feet of electrical cord with plug, and metal hanger and
cord protector. Shield collapses to 2" high; weighs 1 pound.
