Tangle-Trap Adhesive
Natural insect trapping adhesive is used to detect the presence of
insects, estimate population trends, establish time and place for chemical
controls, assess efficacy of control measures, and collect data in
support of ecological and control studies. When applied to a surface
on which insects light, it remains tacky until eventually covered with
insects or foreign matter.
Tangle-trap offers easy application, long-lasting effectiveness, and is

BioQuip’s standard
Berlese funnel is an effective
device used for
extracting small insects
and spiders, or
larvae of boring insects
from forest litter,
dry wood, or infested
branches.
The portable unit is fabricated
around a 3-1/2
gallon sturdy polypropylene
bucket. A lightweight,
spun aluminum
funnel rests on the
bucket’s rim. The
funnel’s smooth surface
may be waxed and
polished if desired. A
1/4" wire mesh screen inside the funnel supports the litter from
which specimens are collected. An AC electrical socket for use
with a 25-watt light bulb is mounted on the underside of the spun
aluminum lid. A six-foot self-polarizing electrical cord contains a
rotary on/off switch. Heat generated by the lamp dries out the
material, and specimens drop down through the screen into a
collecting jar or container of alcohol. (Light bulb and jar not
included.) The Berlese funnel has a 12" (30.5 cm) diameter, is
14" (35.6 cm) high, and weighs 3 pounds, 4 oz.

When placed in a Berlese funnel or other collecting
device, heat packs release heat, avoiding
the need for a light bulb and allowing Berlese
funnels to be used where electricity is inconvenient
or not available.
Biodegradable heat packs generate their own
heat, reaching and maintaining a temperature
between 100° and 158°F. Based on an ancient Chinese formula,
packets contain a mix of iron powder, salt, activated carbon,
water, and wood fibers. Sealed packets are air-activated by
punching a hole in the outer package. They are lightweight,
environmentally safe, practical, and disposable.
Heat packs are 4 x 5" and provide 5 - 10 hours of heat in a
Berlese funnel. They have a shelf life of four years before they
are opened.

Unique, collapsible Berlese funnel was developed
from a design by entomologist LaDonna
Ivie. When extended for use, the funnel is
36" high (91 cm), but when collapsed it is
only 4.5" high x 12.25" in diameter (11.4
x 31 cm).
Upper portion of the funnel section is
unbleached muslin to allow evaporation
of moisture. The funnel is smooth, white
nylon ripstop, with two 12" steel rings
sewn in place and a plastic funnel at the
bottom. A .25" mesh galvanized metal
screen is secured to the lower ring. The
user can place a smaller mesh screen on
top of this screen if desired. Ground litter
from which insects are to be collected is
placed on the screen.
A lamp base with socket, on/off knob, hangar
loop, and 6-foot cord are secured by a drawstring
at the top of the funnel section. The unit
operates on 120V AC electrical current, and a
low-wattage light bulb (not included) is used to
heat and dry out the material placed on the
screen.
The collector is a Whirl-Pak bag (4 oz, 200 ml
capacity) attached to the plastic funnel. This leakproof
bag can be filled with alcohol or other specimen collecting
fluid, and is easily removed and sealed after specimens have
been collected.

This versatile new funnel was designed for
use as a small insect collector or classroom
demonstration unit. It has two 32-oz.
clear styrene jars that can be unscrewed
for access to the collector portion.
Ground litter or infested plant/tree material
is placed in the upper, vented area and
heated from sunlight coming through a window
or lamp placed over the unit. To avoid
heat and dryness, insects crawl downward
and drop through the 1/4" screen mesh and
styrene funnel in the lower half. Live insects
are trapped in the lower portion for
observation, or the catch may be collected
by partially filling the 2-oz. styrene jar with
alcohol and placing it under the funnel.
