<strong>in</strong>formation about agricultural production methods, market<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> constra<strong>in</strong>ts, but they have the<br />

advantage of be<strong>in</strong>g based on nationally-representative stratified r<strong>and</strong>om sample. These surveys are<br />

used here to exam<strong>in</strong>e the patterns <strong>and</strong> trends <strong>in</strong> fruit <strong>and</strong> vegetable production (see Chapter 2) <strong>and</strong><br />

consumption (see Chapter 7).<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, the project carried out two smaller <strong>in</strong>formal surveys to supplement the survey data.<br />

First, an <strong>in</strong>formal survey of <strong>in</strong>stitutions that support the fruit <strong>and</strong> vegetable sector was carried out <strong>in</strong><br />

June 2001. This survey <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong>formal <strong>in</strong>terviews with key <strong>in</strong>formants at research <strong>in</strong>stitutes,<br />

departments of the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Rural Development, seed companies, test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>spections services, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational consultants. The results are reported <strong>in</strong> Chapter 8. Second, an<br />

<strong>in</strong>formal survey of retail outlets was conducted <strong>in</strong> Hanoi. The results are used to supplement the<br />

description of consumption patterns <strong>in</strong> Chapter 7.<br />

6 Organization of the report<br />

This report is divided <strong>in</strong>to n<strong>in</strong>e chapters. Chapter 2 provides an overview of fruit <strong>and</strong><br />

vegetable production patterns <strong>and</strong> trends <strong>in</strong> <strong>Vietnam</strong>, based on statistics from the M<strong>in</strong>istry of<br />

Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Rural Development <strong>and</strong> the 1992-93 <strong>and</strong> 1998 <strong>Vietnam</strong> Liv<strong>in</strong>g St<strong>and</strong>ards Surveys.<br />

Chapter 3 focuses on the production <strong>and</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g patterns of specialized fruit <strong>and</strong> vegetable<br />

growers, based on the IFPRI-MARD Survey of Fruit <strong>and</strong> Vegetable Producers carried out as part of<br />

this project. In Chapter 4, we describe the results of the IFPRI-MARD Survey of Fruit <strong>and</strong> Vegetable<br />

Traders, most of whom are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> some form of post-harvest value-added activities. Chapter 5<br />

summarizes the results of the IFPRI-MARD Survey of Fruit <strong>and</strong> Vegetable Processors, which<br />

provides <strong>in</strong>formation on their size, capacity, procurement procedures, market<strong>in</strong>g, sales <strong>and</strong> costs of<br />

operations, <strong>and</strong> sources of <strong>in</strong>formation. In Chapter 6, we review secondary data regard<strong>in</strong>g the growth<br />

<strong>and</strong> composition of <strong>Vietnam</strong>ese fruit <strong>and</strong> vegetable exports. Chapter 7 describes fruit <strong>and</strong> vegetable<br />

consumption patterns, based on the <strong>Vietnam</strong> Liv<strong>in</strong>g St<strong>and</strong>ards Surveys <strong>and</strong> an <strong>in</strong>formal survey of<br />

retailers. In Chapter 8, we exam<strong>in</strong>e the role of government <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the fruit <strong>and</strong> vegetable sector <strong>in</strong> <strong>Vietnam</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g research <strong>in</strong>stitutes, seed companies, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>spection services. F<strong>in</strong>ally, Chapter 9 summarizes the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of this study <strong>and</strong> draws some<br />

implications for policies to support the fruit <strong>and</strong> vegetable sector, with emphasis on the post-harvest<br />

activities.<br />
