A Closed-Cavity-Facade for the Tallest High-rise<br />
in Switzerland<br />
The energetic sustainability of a <strong>building</strong> is significantly driven by the engineered interaction of façade<br />
and mechanical <strong>building</strong> services. With a completely new façade type, the Closed-Cavity-Façade,<br />
which solves all aspects of <strong>building</strong> physics, energy- and daylight aspects <strong>at</strong> a highly <strong>advanced</strong> level,<br />
one can achieve a sustainable and therefore future-oriented project goal. This new façade type does by<br />
no means make the current permanently ventil<strong>at</strong>ed double-skin-façades obsolete, but it enhances<br />
sustainability even further.<br />
The <strong>building</strong> skin plays a key role, taking into account the numerous energy savings regul<strong>at</strong>ions in<br />
German speaking countries such as EnEV, MINERGIE, OIB-directive 6 and ÖNORM respectively, as<br />
well as the green <strong>building</strong> labels of DGNB, ÖGNI, LEED, BREEAM and so forth, which play a key<br />
role when marketing a <strong>building</strong>.<br />
1 The Closed-Cavity-Facade (CCF)<br />
The Closed-Cavity-Façade in its most original form is a completely sealed double-skin-façade<br />
construction with triple glazing internally and single glazing externally. N<strong>at</strong>ural window ventil<strong>at</strong>ion is<br />
strictly speaking not intended anymore. This „purest“ form is in my opinion only suitable for selfoccupied<br />
<strong>building</strong>s. A project-developer, who frequently doesn’t now his future client or tenant yet<br />
during the planning phase, will not omit n<strong>at</strong>ural window ventil<strong>at</strong>ion for plain marketing reasons. A<br />
combin<strong>at</strong>ion of CCF with operable window elements however is possible <strong>at</strong> any time. Drawings for<br />
such a layout are ready to be pulled out of the drawer.<br />
