A very small, young thallus amoiig mosses may belong here. It has the geiieral aiiatomy of<br />

l'on~mrk., but the cortex is less developed and is covered by the gelified remains of a tomentnm.<br />

The algae fill nearly the whole thickness of the thallus.<br />

Thallus squamose to foliose with dark or light colonred rhizinae, corticate on both surfaces;<br />

upper cortex pseudoparenchymatous from thin-walled, large periclinal hyphae, without tomen-<br />

tum; algal layer of coiled chains of Scytonenza in thin sheaths; mednlla of thin-walled, somewhat<br />

conglutinate hyphae not sharply differentiated from the lower cortex of more or less septate,<br />

periclinal hyphae. Apothecia superficial, sessile or somewhat constricted below; amphithecium<br />

absent; parathecinm corticate of large-celled pseudoparenchyma, wit'h large septate periclinal<br />

hyphae within; medulla lacking; hypothecium light or dark; asci 8-spored; ascospores hyaline,<br />

unicellular, spherical to ellipsoidal-fusiform, thin-wallecl. Spermogonia in warts on the'thallus,<br />

spermatiophores frequently septate; spermatia straight, elongate-cylindric.<br />

thallus 175p crassitudine; cortex 7-10p crassitudine, hyphis periclinalibus; stratum gonimicum<br />
