Thallns very thin, greenish ashy from a minute chroococcoid alga, appearing minutely rough<br />

from the fractured surface of the rock, K yellow, drying somewhat tallmy; algae protococcoid,<br />

cells 7-6p in diameter, splie~.ical, replaced in part by the rery minute chroococcoid alga. Apothecia<br />

sessile, black. up to 1 nnn. in diameter, clisc plane to slightly convex, margin inrolled, thin, prominent,<br />

smooth to slightly mldnlate; parathecium carbonaceous, 110-1Wp thick at the margin, of<br />

va~.iable thickness under the hypothecium, up to 130~; hypothecimu not differentiated; thecium<br />

I 10-120p tall : paraphyses slender, moniliform, once or tjvice dichotonlously branched just above<br />

the asci, e11c1ing in a tuft of short, moniliform, bro~vnish branches in the epithecial gel; asci<br />

55-60 X 10-lip, cylindric, tip thickened, protoplast with a rery small papilla ; ascospores monostichons,<br />

Thallns epilithic, effused, thin, ashy td deep olive, minutely rimose areolate, snrrounded by a<br />

narrow dark line, K y~llowing; cortex 35p thick, of coarse thin-walled, periclinal hyphae; algal<br />

layer 7 5 thick, ~ of discrete colonies of protococcoid cells, somewhat angular, mostly 7-lop in<br />

diameter; medulla 150p thick, loosely woven and enclosing rock crystals. Apothecia black, sessile,<br />

solitary or confluent in dense clusters, round or angular by mutual pressure, 0.5-0.7 mm.<br />

in diameter, disc plane or nearly so, margin elevated; parathecinm 35-40~ thick, carbonaceous,<br />

of thick-walled, periclinal hyphae extending under the hypothecinm and just above the algal layer<br />

of the thallns; hypothecium and just above the algal layer of the thallus; hypothecium lenticular,<br />

about 5 5 thick ~ in the centre, composed of loosely woven, light brown hyphae; thecium<br />

about 75-90p tall; paraphyses slender, imbedded in the thecial gel, scarcely septate below, dichotomously<br />

branched in the upper third, more frequently septate, terminal cell dark brown,<br />

spherical, about 4p in diameter; asci 35 x 10p tip thickened when young with broadly papillate<br />

protoplast, becoming thin-walled at maturity, c$indric; ascospores sub-distichous, hyaline,<br />

broadly ellipsoidal, 9-12 x 6-8p. [Spermogonia black, immersed ; wall fuliginous, dimidiate ;<br />

s~ermatiophores fasciculate, short ; sterigmata arcnate to hamate, 9-14 X lpl.
