The worms were large. 10 cm and longer (Zwarts & Esselink 1989: Fig. 9), and thus large enough to be highly profitable (Zwarts et al. 1996b: Fig. 8). This was surely the case in spring and early summer when worms fed at the surface (Esselink & Zwarts 1989). Indeed. Bunskoeke et al. (1996) found that the majority of the Oystercatchers look Ragworms at this time of the year on the mudflats near Schiermonnikoog. only 10 km from ihe study area, and this was also Ihe case on the mudflats 2 km eastern of the Nes area (Hulscher & Zwarts unpubl.). Because Ragworms were obviously a summer prey taken by a few specialists among the small number of Oystercatcher that were present, we excluded them from the analysis. Lugworms were rare in our study area, because the substrate was too soft. Their contribution to the prey biomass was only I to 2 g nv 2 in most years, although they occurred with 4 to 11 g nv 2 in 1977-1979 (Zwarts & Wanink 1993: Fig. 4G). Since we never saw an Oystercatcher take this prey species in the study area, there is no reason to lake ii into account. First year Shore Crabs were very common on the tidal flats, but Oystercatchers ignored them. Older o a; •? -. era -4 a £ •6 •® JA. 1977 ' 78 ' 79 ' 80 ' 81 ' 82 ' 83 ' 84 ' 85 year crabs were rare in our study area. Since only a few specimens were observed to be taken in early summer, also this species could safely be ignored in the calculation of the total food supply. I stimating biomass consumption We assumed that the Oystercalchers counted during low tide in the study area obtained all their food there, i.e. they did not consume appreciable amounts of fcxxl elsewhere either earlier or later in the tidal cycle, and lhat if night feeding occurred, the distribution over ihe area did not differ from those by day. The daily consumption varies between 36 g in summer and 40-50 g in winter and amounts, on an annual basis, to 39.4 g. The predation pressure by the other shorebirds was estimated from the relationship between body weighl and basal metabolic rate (BMR), according to Kersten & Piersma (1987). and further based on the general assumptions (e.g. Smit 1984b. Zwarts et al. 1990a & b) that the daily energy expenditure is equivalent to 2.2 x BMR. the energy content of flesh is 22 kJ g" 1 and 85' of the ingested energy is digested.
