553. A preposition is parsed by stating what part of<br />

speech, and between what words it shows the relation;<br />

thus," The waters of Jordan." O/is a preposition, and<br />

shows the relation between Jordan and waters.<br />

Here Jordan is tbe regimen of the preposition of; of Jordan is the all·<br />

junct of waters; and waters is the principal tLl which the adjunct IJe1ollgs.<br />

554. PRELDIINARY ORAL EXERCISE.<br />

When I say, .. The book is on the table," what word shows the relation<br />

of book to the table? What part of speech are words that show the rela·<br />

tion between nouns or pronouns, and other words in the sentence? Theu<br />

what part of speech is on? Could the book be in any other relation tQ the<br />

table than on it i It might be off the table, above the table, under the<br />

table, beside the table, &0. Then what part of speech are off, above, under,<br />

beside? Why i When we say, .. They live ill the country," wbat word<br />

shows the relation between country and iit'e? Then what part of speech<br />

is in?<br />

EXERCISES.<br />

In tbe following sentences, point out the preposition, and the words<br />

between which it shows the relation. Name the adjunct and principal.<br />
