fore the infinitive; as," I know not what I shall do;" abridged, " I know<br />
not what to do." In this way are to be analyzed and explained such<br />
phrases as, ., Il'here to go," .. when to read," .. how to do," .. whom to smd."<br />
&c.<br />
656. A depeudeut clauoe may often be abridged by sub.,tituting an<br />
equivalent qualifying word, or au adjunct; as, .. Tbe man w!to is honest<br />
will be respected;" abridged, " The !tonest ma:J. will Le respecten."-<br />
.. IVhen the sun set we returned; " abridged, "At 81lnset we returned,"<br />
657. ~everal dependcnt clauses may bc varionsly connected with the<br />
same leading clause, and abridged in the same manner as above; aB,<br />

passed, an hour before;" abridged, .. Having arrived [or, on arriving]<br />
at the station, they were informed of the cars having passed all hour before."<br />
