285. It is necessary to these words being regarded 8S indefinites-I.<br />

That they begin a dependent clause; 2. That they do not ask a question;<br />

3. That an antecedent can not be ~upplied without cbanging the een~e;<br />

and 4. That the whole clause be either the suhject of a verb, or the object<br />

of a verb or preposition.<br />

These remarks will apply to all the following<br />

examples: "I kuow who wrote that letter."-" Tell me who wrote that<br />

lelter."-" Do yuu know who wrote that letter 1"-" Nobody knows who<br />

be is."-" Who he is, can not be kuown."-u Did he tell you who he is I"<br />

-" We can not tell which is he."-" I know not what I shall do."-" It<br />

is uncertain to whom that book belongs. "-" Teach me what is truth nnd<br />

what is error."<br />

PARSING.<br />

286. Interrogative pronouns, in both the direct and<br />

the indirect questions, are parsed by stating their gender,<br />

number, and case; thus:-<br />

"Who comes 1 I know not who comes."<br />

Who is an interrogative pronoun, masculine or feminine in the nomina·<br />

tive singular.<br />

Wno is an indefinite pronoun (or an interrogative pronoun used respon·<br />

sively), ma~culille or feminine, in the nominative singular.<br />

Rea~ons may be assigned for each statement, as I'xemrlified (253).<br />

EXERCISES.<br />

1. Point out in which of the following sentences, who, which, and u;hat are<br />

relatives; in which, interTogatiL'cs; and ill which indefinites.<br />

Who steals my purse, steals trash.-To whom did you give<br />

that book ?-What I do, thou knowest not now.-Who you are,<br />

what you are, or to whom you belong, no one knows.-What<br />

shall I do ?-Who built that house ? -Do you know b.\- whom<br />

that house was built ?-Is that the man who built that hou~c?<br />

Which book is yours ?-Do you know which book is yours?<br />

1 saw a book which was said to be yours.-1 know which book<br />

is yours.-What in me is dark, illumine.-W'hat is crooked,<br />

can not be made straight.-What is wanting, ('an not be nUll1-<br />

bered.-What is wanted ?-1 know what is wanted.<br />

IV. ADJECTIVE PRONOUNS.<br />

287. ADJECTIVE PRONOUNS are words used, sometimes<br />

like adjectives, to qualify a noun, and sometimes like<br />

pronouns, to stand instead of nouns.
