II. COKSTRCCTION OF SENTENCES.<br />
660. \V ORDS are arranged in sentences, according to<br />
certain rules, called the Rules of Syntax (662 and 666).<br />

1. In every sentence there must be a verb and its nominative (01' subject),<br />
expressed 01' understood.<br />
2. Every article, aojectiyc, adjective pn'noun, 01' participle, mu,t have<br />
a substantive (IO(). expreEsed or undel'>tood.<br />
3. Every nominative or subjed has its own verb, expressed or undel"<br />
stood.<br />
4. Every finite verb (that is, every verb not in the infiuitive or partici.<br />
pIes) has its own nominative, expressed or understood.<br />
5. Every possessive case is governed by n noun or substantive whose<br />
signification it sel'ves to limit.<br />
6. Every objective case is governed by a transitive verb in the active
