615. A grammatical subject, being a pronoun, is usually modified by a<br />
noun in apposition; as, "I, Paul, would have come :" or by a relative<br />
clause as in No.5 above.<br />
Note.-Pronouns of the third person, and also relative pronouns, refer to<br />
their antecedents together with their modifications; as, "Rebuke a wise<br />
man, and he will love thee."<br />
616. When the grammatical subject is an infinitive, or a participle used<br />
as a noun, it may I:.e modified like the verb in the predicate (630).<br />

In the following propositions. point out the grammatical sulJjecL-the<br />
logical-and state how the grammatical subject is modified :-<br />
All men are not wise.-Tall oaks from little acorns grow.<br />
Milton's" Paradise Lost" is a work of great merit.--W isdom' s<br />
ways are pleasantness.-The love of money is the root of all<br />
evil.-Evil communications corrupt good manners.-The disposition<br />
to do good should be cherished.-The walls of Babylon<br />
were fifteen miles long.-A desire to excel will stimulate to<br />
exertion.-The effort to succeed will be cromled ,vith success.<br />
-All things come alike to all.<br />

MODIFICATION OF MODIFYING WORDS.<br />
617. Modifying or limiting words mDy themselves be modified :-<br />
1. A nQun modifying another, may itself be modified ill all the wnya in<br />
which a Doun as a grammatical subject is modified (614).<br />
2. An adjective qualifying a noun rnay itself be mcdified:-<br />
1. By an adjunct; as, "Be not weary in well.doing."<br />
2. By an adverb; as, "Truly virtuous men often endure reproach."<br />
3. By an infinitive; as, "Be swift to hear, and slow to speak."<br />
3. Again, an adverb may be modified :-<br />
1. By an adjunct; as, "Agreeably to Nature."<br />
2. By another adverb; as .• < Yours very sincerely."<br />
