3. III each of the following sentences. point out the compound relative<br />
-mention the antecedent omitted, to which it refers. Insert the antecedent<br />
in each sentence, and make the necessary change in the relative<br />
(273):-<br />
'Whoever steals my purse, steals trash.-Whoever does no<br />
good, does harm.-",Vbatever purifies the heart, fortifies it.<br />
Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye to them<br />
also.-1Vhoever sins, will suffer.-I love whoever loves me.<br />
Now whatsoever God hath said to thee, do.<br />
4. In the following sentences, wherever it call be done, change the relative<br />
and antecedent for the compound relative:-<br />
Bring with you every thing which you see.-Any one who<br />
told -such a story, has been misinformed.-Any thing that is<br />
worth doing at all, is worth doing well.-Any thing that gives<br />
pain to others, deserves not the name of pleasure.-Every one<br />
who loves pleasure, will be a poor man.<br />

279. Who, which, and what, when used in asking questions,<br />
are called Interrogative Pronouns; as, "H7w is<br />
there ?"-" JVhich will you take ?"-" JJ7wt did he say?"<br />
280. Who and which are declined like the relatives (~;jS).<br />
281. In questions, who is equivalent to what person; which and !I'hat<br />
have a noun following, to which, like an adjective, th~y belong j or they<br />
refer to one understood, bnt easily supplied: thus, " Who [what person] is<br />
there 1"-" IYhich book will you take ?"-" '''hat [thing] did he say 1"<br />
282. TVh() applies to persons only; which and u-l",t, to pereons or<br />
things.<br />
283. As applied to persons, who inquires for the name; u'hich, fOl' the<br />
individual; what, for the chamcter or occupation; a~, .. Tfrho wrote that<br />
book ("-" IIII'. W ehster."-"Which of them ("'-,'loa" Webster."-" lVhat is<br />
he 1"-" A lexicographer."<br />

(306). This will be best illustrated by an example:-<br />
Interrogative.-" TVllo wrote that letter ('<br />
Relative.-" I know the person who wrote that letter;" that is I am<br />
acquainted with him.<br />

Indefinite.-" I know who wrote that letter;" that is, I know by whom<br />
that letter was written.
