EXERCISES, NO. II.<br />

1. In the following exercise, tell the tense, mood, voice, person and<br />

number, and always in this order, thus: "Loves"-Present, indicative,<br />

active, third person, singular.<br />

2, In the Imperative, omit the tense, and say thu~," Love thou "-Imper·<br />

ative, active, second person, singular.<br />

3. In the Infinitive and Participles, omit the person and number, and<br />

say thus, " 1'0 love"-Present, infinitive, active; "Loving"-Present parti.<br />

ciple, active.<br />

N. B.-The pronoun prefixed is no part of the verb, but helps to show<br />

its person and Dumber. The auxiliaries ( or signs) are not taken separate·<br />

ly, but always with the verb; so that the two words, and sometimes three,<br />

as in the future-perfect indicative, are parsed together as one word; thu~,<br />

" Has loved "-the present· perfect, indicati re, active, third person, singular.<br />

lIe loves.-We have loved.-He lovcd.-They had loved.­<br />

You shall love.-They may have loved.-We might love.­<br />

Love tholl.-To love.-You had gone.-They will go.-To<br />

have gone.-W e will write.-They may write.-They should<br />

go.-He has fallen.-You had given.-W e might have gone.<br />

-James has written.-Robert loves to write.-To write is<br />

THE OBJECTIVE OASE.<br />

498. A transitive verb, in the nctive voice, tells what its subject does to<br />

some other person 01' thing. That person or thing is the object of the verb,<br />

and is in tbe objective case. Tbus," He lovea UR," loves is a transitive verb,<br />

in tbe active voice, and tells what its subject, he, does to us. Us, then, is<br />

its object, nnu is in the objective case. See also 820.<br />

whether transitive 01' intransitive, and why; what is tbe subject, and why;<br />

2. Conjugate the verbs, and tell their tense, mood, voice, person, and<br />
