composed.<br />

1071. All feet in poetry are reducible to eight kinds; four of two<br />

syllables, and four of three, as follows :-<br />

I. FEET OF TWO SYLLABLES.<br />

1. ~-\.Il Iambus ~ -; as, defend.<br />

2. A Trochee - '"' ; as, noble.<br />

3. A Spondee - -; as, vain man.<br />

4. A Pyrrhic ~ '-' ; as, on :\ (lilll).<br />

II. FEET OF THREE SYLLABLES.<br />

1. An Anapxst '-' v - ; as, Intercede.<br />

2. A Dactyl - _ v; as, durable.<br />

3. An Amphibrach 1.1 - v; as, abundant.<br />

4 .• t Tribach ~ - '-'; as, (tol)erable.<br />

1072. Of all these, the principal are the Iambns, T"ochee, A 1/(/-<br />

1)(1':;/, and Dactyl.<br />

The other four feet are used chiefly in connection<br />

with these, in order to give variety to the measure.<br />

1073. A T,."chre has the first syllable accented, anl! the last uuaccented;<br />

as, "D/tli!, miisic.<br />

1074. An Iambus has the first syllable unftccented, and the last<br />

accented; as, (idore, di'ji:ml.<br />

1075. A SpollClee has both the words or syllables accented; as,<br />

" i'a"in nl,(fn."<br />

1076. A Pyt'lhic has both the words or syllables unaccented; as,<br />

"un a (hill)."<br />

1077. A Duclyl has the first syllable accented, and the two last<br />

unaccented; as, 'l"trtll,!lIs.<br />

107S. An A mphill/'ach has the firilt and the last syllable unaccented,<br />

and the middle one accented; as, cilnti!ntment.<br />

1079. An A naprest has the two first syllables unaccented, and the<br />

last accented; as, lldircede.<br />

1080. A Tribrach has all its syllables unaccented; nmn I ldibll.<br />

10Sl. A verse is usually named from the name of the foot which<br />

predominates in it; thus, Iambic, T'l"ochaic, &c.<br />

I. IAMBIC VERSE<br />

1082. An iambic verse consists of iambuses, and consequently<br />

has the accent on the second, fourth, sixth, &c., syllables. It has<br />

different metres, iii follows:
