AND DEPENDENT CLAUSES.<br />
637. The clauses of a compound t'entence are either independ6l1t 01'<br />
dependent; sumetimes called co·orJi7late and suoordinale.<br />
63S. An independent clause is one that makes complete sense by itsdf.<br />
639. A dependent clause is one that mal;es complete sense only in connection<br />
with auother clause.<br />
Thus, " 'Ve left when the sun set ;" " We left," is an independent clanse;<br />
it makes scnse by itself; "when the sun set." is a depenuent clause; it<br />
does not make complete seuse unless joined with the other clause.<br />
640. The dependent clause may often stand first; a~, .< When the sun<br />
set, we left."<br />
641. All the clauses of a seutence may be independent; one of them<br />
always must be independent.<br />
642. The clause on which another depends is called the leadin.1 clause;<br />
its subject, the leadillg subject; and its predicate, the leading predicate.<br />
But this leading clause itself may be depen!lent 011 another, which i" a<br />
leadi ng clause to it.<br />
EXERCISES.<br />
Iu the following sentences, state which are ,qimple nnu which are com·<br />
pound. In the compound sentences, point out the members or clauses:-<br />
Ignorance moves our pity, and that modifies our aversion.<br />
If we have not always time to read, we have always time to<br />
reflect.-The poor if! haied ercn of his own neighbour, but the<br />
rich hath ruany friends.-The eyes of the Lord are in eYl'r,v<br />
place beholding the evil und the good.-Righteousness exalteth<br />
a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.-Pride goeth before<br />
destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.-Death and<br />
life are in the power of the tongue.-Though he slay me, yet<br />
will I trust in him.-The slothful man saitb, "There is a lion<br />
in the way."-When the righteous are in authority, the people<br />
rejoice.<br />
In the preceding simple scntences and members, point out the 8ubject<br />
and predicate, with their respective modifications-state what clauses are<br />
independent aud what dependent.<br />
