79. ETYMOLOGY treats of the different sorts of words,<br />

their various modifications, and their derivation!'.<br />

WORDS.<br />

80. A WORD is an articulate sound used by common<br />

consent as the ",ign of an idea.<br />

81. A few worda consist of vocal or vOlVel s(,unds only, withont articu·<br />

lation; as, I, ah, awe, 011, owe, eye, &c.<br />

82.-1. Words, in respect of their Formation, are<br />

either P1'irnitive or Derivative, Simple or Compound.<br />

83. A Plimith'e word is one that is noL del'i"cd from any other word in<br />

the language i as, boy, just, father.<br />

84. A Derivative word is one that is de\'il'cd from ,'orne other word;<br />

as, boyish, justice, fatherly.<br />

85. A Simple word is one that is not combiued with any other word;<br />

as, man, house, city.<br />

86. A Compound word is one thnt is made lip of two or more simple<br />

words; as, manhood, horseman.<br />

87.-2. 'Vords, in respect of Form, are either Declinable<br />

or Indeclinable.<br />

88. A Declinable word is one which undel'goes certain cbanges of form<br />

or termination, to express the different relations of gellder, number, case,<br />

degree, voice, mood, tense, person; usually termed in Grammar, ACCIDI!NTS i<br />

I1S, man, men; love, loves, loved, &c.<br />

89. In the changes which they nndergo, Nouns and Pronouns are said<br />

to be declined, Verbs, to be inflected or conjugated (473.)<br />

90. Au Indeclinable word is one which undergoes no change of form; liS;<br />

I!ood, some, perhaps.
