GENEr.AL RULES FOR SPELLING WORDS.<br />

RULl! I.<br />

53. Monosyllables ending with f, 1, or s, preceded by a single vowel,<br />

double the final consonant; as, staff. mill, pass.<br />

54. Exceptions.-Of, if, af', is, has, was, ui" gas, yes, thie, us, thus, pUB.<br />

RULE II.<br />

55. WOlds ending with any consonant except f, I, or 8, do not double<br />

the finalleUcr; as, sit, not, lip, put, that, in.<br />

56. Exceplions.-Adu, LUlln, butt, buzz, ebb, egg, er,', inn, odd, purr.<br />

RCLE III.<br />

57. Words ending in y preceded by a consonant, change y into i before<br />

an ndditioual letter or Ryllablc; ns, spy, spies; happy, happier, happiest;<br />

curry, carrier, ca1Tied; .f..tncy, fanciful.<br />

58. E.rception l.-But y is not chnnged before ing; as, deny, denying.<br />

59.-2. Words eoding in y preceded by a vowel, retain the y unchang­<br />

"tl; as, boy, boys, boyish, boyhood.<br />

Exception S.-But lay, pay, say, make laid, paid, said; aud day makeB<br />

daily.<br />

BULE IV.<br />

60. Monosyllables and words accented on the last syllable, endiJJg with<br />

a single consonant preceded by n ~ingle vowel, double that consonant<br />

before an additional syllable beginning with a vowel; !lS, rob, robber;"<br />

admit, admittance, admitted.<br />

Exception.-But x and h are never doubled.<br />

61. But when n diphthong or a double vowel precedes, or the accent is<br />

not on the last sylIaLle, the consonant is not doubled; ns, boil, boiling,<br />

boiler; wool, woolen; fool,foolish; visit, visited.<br />

62. Exception. •.-In about fifty words ending in I with a vowel before<br />

it, and not accented on the last syllable, many writers, contrary to analogy<br />

and without necessity, double the 1 improperly before an additional<br />

syllable. These are such words as travel, trat'elier, travelling, trat'elied."<br />

63. So also sand p are generally, though improperly, doubled in bias,<br />

worship, and kidnap; ae, biassing, worshipper, kidnapping. Webster, and<br />

mnny writers following him, in these words conform to the general rule •<br />
